Bush Hamdan will face familiar faces against Texas

Kentucky offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan has had a very interesting coaching career. The former Boise State quarterback started his professional journey as a student assistant at Colorado under Dan Hawkins in 2009. Three years later at age 26, Hamdan was the wide receivers coach at Florida. The now 38-year-old play-caller has bounced around multiple places anywhere and everywhere since.

Bush Hamdan has been a lot of places in a short amount of time with stops at Florida, Washington, Missouri, Boise State, and Kentucky plus a short stay in the NFL. In the game against Texas on Saturday afternoon, Hamdan will face some former colleagues.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was the offensive coordinator for the Falcons in 2017 under head coach Dan Quinn while Hamdan was the quarterbacks coach. The NFC South franchise finished that season 10-6 winning a playoff game in the wild card round before falling to the Philadelphia Eagles. Atlanta’s offense averaged 22.1 points per game finishing No. 15 in the NFL in scoring offense. Julio Jones finished the season with 1,444 receiving yards earning All-Pro honors.

Hamdan left the Falcons staff after one year to become the offensive coordinator at Washington in 2018. Steve Sarkisian returned to college football in 2019 to become the offensive coordinator at Alabama. The two will be on opposing sidelines for the first time on Saturday afternoon at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.

The other relationship is a longer one.

Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski worked at Boise State from 2006-13 under Dan Hawkins and Chris Petersen. Kwiatkowski then followed Petersen to Washington where he was on staff from 2014-20. Hamdan was a player when Kwiatkowski was a position coach at Boise State. The two Boise State alums then spent four years working on the same staff at Washington in the Pac-12. Now they will face each other in a head-to-head matchup as Kwiatkowski is now in year four as the defensive coordinator at Texas.

Bush Hamdan will face multiple former colleagues in Kentucky’s Week 13 matchup in Austin.
