Bubba Wallace reacts to President Donald Trump potentially attending Daytona 500

Bubba Wallace is not worried about President Donald Trump possibly attending the Daytona 500 on Sunday. While speaking to reporters at the Daytona 500 media day this week, Wallace said he “couldn’t care less if Trump shows up at NASCAR’s biggest race of the year.

“We’re here to race,” Wallace said, per the Associated Press. “Not for the show.”

In July 2020, Donald Trump suggested that Bubba Wallace should apologize after NASCAR rallied around him following a discovery of a noose in his assigned stall at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. Federal authorities ruled that it wasn’t a hate crime since the noose had been hanging there since October.

“Has [Bubba Wallace apologized] to all of those great NASCAR drivers & officials who came to his aid, stood by his side, & were willing to sacrifice everything for him, only to find out that the whole thing was just another HOAX?” Trump wrote on social media at the time, per ESPN. “That & Flag decision has caused lowest ratings EVER!”

“Always deal with the hate being thrown at you with LOVE!… Love should come naturally as people are TAUGHT to hate. Even when it’s HATE from the POTUS,” Wallace responded on social media at the time.”

Wallace also talked about Trump’s post on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “So to be late to the party is one thing, and to be wrong on the factual information is another,” Wallace said. “But all in all, he did get one thing right in his tweet, though: the great officials that continue to stand behind me — NASCAR drivers and officials that continue to stand behind me through it all — he got that part right. We have a great sport that I’m proud to be a part of.”

The Federal Aviation Administration said on Monday that Trump is expected to attend the Daytona 500, but NASCAR has yet to receive confirmation. Trump has attended the race before as he was the Grand Marshall for the 2020 Daytona 500. His potential appearance would come one week after attending Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, making him the first sitting president to attend the NFL’s championship game.

“For 500 heart-pounding miles, these fierce competitors will chase the checkered flag … and make their play for pure American glory, and that’s what it is: pure American glory,” Trump said before the 2020 Daytona 500.
