Breaking down Nebraska’s fullback and post-graduate football camps

Breaking down Nebraska’s fullback and post-graduate football camps

On Tuesday afternoon, 57 fullbacks and 44 post-graduates participated in two separate Nebraska camps.

Both camps were the first of their kind at NU. The Huskers launched its first-ever fullback camp under Matt Rhule and a post-graduate camp featuring prospects from other four-year colleges, junior colleges, and recently graduated high school seniors.

College coaches from UTEP, Rice, Nebraska-Kearney, Wayne State, Midland, Concordia, Peru State and Southwest Minnesota State were also present.

Former Nebraska running backs coach Ron Brown addressed the 57 fullbacks about the history of the fullback position.

“Is there anyone around the country running a fullback camp? Thank you to Coach Rhule and Coach Satterfield,” Brown told the campers. “All of the years I’ve been here, we never thought of doing something like this.”

Brown then went into the history of the position. He broke down names like Tony Davis, Rex Burkhead, Johnny Stanton and Dan Alexander, who came to NU at other positions and ended up playing fullback in the NFL.

Brown added that 12 of their last 27 top fullbacks made it into the NFL. He also highlighted the story of C.J. Zimmerer to the camp, who was a standout at the position despite being a type 1 diabetic.

Fullback camp prospect report

HOL take: Battle Creek’s Trent Uhlir is the son of former Husker fullback Todd Uhlir (1993-95). His younger brother Tyron Uhlir was also a Husker fullback (1999).

Trent Uhlir is regarded as one of the top shot-put throwers in the nation, as he went 61-11 1/2 to finish second at state in 2023. That mark ranked third for all juniors nationally. He also went 188-2 in the discus to finish second at state.

Uhlir grew up a standout baseball player and can throw a 90 mph fastball. He’s a well-rounded athlete on the Husker staff’s radar. He was just over 6 feet and 225 pounds on Tuesday. He posted a 35-inch vertical.

HOL take: Stromsburg (Neb.) Cross County’s Izaac Dickey caught the attention of the Husker staff. The eight-man standout looked impressive and was pulled out of the crowd to talk more with the NU staff.

Post-graduate camp quick hits

HOL take: Recent Maryland commit and class of 2024 Germany linebacker Justin Okoronkwo participated in Nebraska’s camp. He picked up an offer from the Huskers earlier this week. He highlighted a group of European prospects at the camp.

Another German 2024 prospect in the camp was offensive tackle Keon Rohe, who at 6-foot-7, 275-pounds stood out on Tuesday.

Sweedish running back Oliver Lundberg Coleman was another name of note in the group, who also camped at Ohio State this week. He’s currently committed to Western Kentucky but recently picked up an offer from Temple last week.

***Former Cincinnati linebacker Cameron Junior took part in the camp. The class of 2021 linebacker played in three games for the Bearcats and entered the portal on Apr. 21 with three to play three.

***16 of the prospects at the camp were from junior colleges. Council Bluffs Iowa Western C.C. was well represented with six prospects at the camp.

****Reiver quarterback Luke Longval was there and looked impressive throwing the football. He tore his ACL as a senior in high school and is battling to win the job at IWCC.

Iowa Western C.C. head coach Scott Strohmeirer said Nebraska showed him a lot of interest at the camp, and there might be some mutual interest for Longval to join the Huskers’ as a walk-on with four to play four.
