Breaking down Michigan football scholarship chart following spring transfer portal window

Michigan Wolverines football spring practices are in the rear view, and the NCAA transfer portal is closed for all college football players. In terms of departures, the roster is set, while the Wolverines can still add plays through the portal throughout the offseason.

Michigan lost seven players to the transfer portal during the April window: freshman linebacker Jeremiah Beasley, sophomore linebacker Semaj Bridgeman, senior wide receiver Cristian Dixon, sophomore wide receiver Karmello English, sophomore offensive lineman Amir Herring, sophomore linebacker Hayden Moore and sophomore cornerback DJ Waller Jr.

Michigan has also landed three transfer commitments this spring in wide receivers C.J. Charleston (Youngstown State) and Amorion Walker (Ole Miss) and kicker Dominic Zvada (Arkansas State).

As of May 3, 2024, we project that Michigan is at 94 scholarships, over the 85-scholarship limit.

It’s also important to note that the program does not update the scholarship status of any player after they sign their letters of intent, so this is indeed a projection, as we’re counting each athlete that was on scholarship at one point.

For example, former Michigan defensive tackle Cam Goode, who was on scholarship in 2022, moved to walk-on status last season, saying, “I switched to NIL. It was pretty much, ‘We’re taking your scholarship, and we’re giving it to somebody that doesn’t have a scholarship in a younger class.’”

Michigan scholarship chart notes

• Michigan shedded three scholarships at linebacker in April, with all three departing players — Beasley, Bridgeman and Moore — having never played a snap in a game as a Wolverine. The Maize and Blue still have nine linebackers on the roster.

• Special teams now has four scholarships, though it’s possible that a graduate student such as Wagner is no longer taking one.

• The Wolverines were thin at wide receiver but bolstered the numbers back up to nine scholarships with the Charleston and Walker additions. Walker played cornerback last season at U-M and this spring at Ole Miss but returns as an expected wideout.

• Michigan has been targeting defensive tackles, cornerbacks and safeties in the transfer portal. It’s possible that other positions pop up as the offseason continues, but there have been targets at those three positions.
