Boxer Gervonta Davis hops on Instagram Live from jail, sounds off on judge who sentenced him

Gervonta Davis is currently serving a 90-day sentence in the Baltimore Detention Center. The 28-year-old boxer was sent to the detention center on Thursday after Circuit Judge Althea M. Handy discovered Davis was not fulfilling his house arrest sentence at the ordered location.

Handy had permitted Davis to serve the house arrest at his longtime coach and trainer Calvin Ford’s home in Baltimore. Instead, Davis stayed at a Four Seasons Hotel and a $3.4 million high-rise penthouse in South Baltimore that he purchased.

Davis’ new residence isn’t so cushy, and the undefeated boxer is letting the public know.

“This judge is crazy, bro,” Davis said through a phone call to an outside source on his Instagram live. “She locked me up because, basically, I bought a property. I get everything in my power to listen to my lawyers for home detention. I listened to everybody, to the team.”

Davis was on house arrest committing a hit-and-run on Nov. 5, 2020. Following running a red light in his 2020 Lamborghini Urus, Davis crashed into a 2004 Toyota Solara. Moved by the collision, Davis wrecked into a fence of a 7-Elleven and injured four people, including a pregnant woman.

After pleading guilty, Davis was given 90 days on house arrest and three years of probation for the incident. Davis seemingly believes the location he was supposed to stay in was unfair.

“She said she wanted me to be in my apartment, a one-bedroom apartment, and I couldn’t even take that. She wanted me to stay in a one-bedroom. I couldn’t even have my kids come visit me,” Davis said.

Davis certainly isn’t used to a modest lifestyle. The WBA lightweight champion is 29-0 with 27 knockouts, most recently defeating Ryan Garcia in the seventh round. According to reports, the purse alone of this fight was $5 million.

Despite his success in the ring, Davis has had several troubling controversies in recent years. In 2019, an arrest warrant was put out for Davis after he allegedly shoved a police officer at a mall in McLean, Virginia. More recently, domestic violcence charges were dropped against Davis in May.

In the face of his past, Davis hopes to spread word of what he believes is wrong.

“I just wanted to spread light on this situation because I feel like [Judge Handy] is taking advantage of me. The things that she’s doing now is not right.”
