PURDUE FOOTBALL

Milton Wright will be part of the Supplemental Draft, which will be held July 11. In fact, he’s the only player currently available for the Supplemental Draft. The NFL last held a Supplemental Draft in 2019.

Wright was an academic casualty last season. He tried to regain his eligibility at Purdue for 2023, but to no avail. It sounds like NFL teams have been kicking the tires on Louisville, Ky., native.

One source close to Wright told me: “We have been in communication with Milton a lot and already have talked with numerous teams.”

It will be interesting to see if Wright is selected. In 2021, his last season with the Boilermakers, Wright made 57 receptions for 732 yards and seven touchdowns. He made 99 catches for 1,325 yards and 10 TDs in three seasons in West Lafayette.

Some notable supplemental picks from years gone by: Terrelle Pryor, Cris Carter, Brian Bosworth and Josh Gordon.

Hudson Card is at the Manning Passing Academy as I type this. The camp features 45 of the top quarterbacks in college football who work as counselors for the four-day camp. Other Purdue quarterbacks who have been counselors: Aidan O’Connell, David Blough and Curtis Painter.

• Purdue has added 17 players from the portal. Where did they come from? A conference-by-conference look:

SEC (8): S Anthony Brown (Arkansas); CB Markevious Brown (Ole Miss); OL Luke Griffin (Missouri); LS Daniel Hawthorne (Missouri); DL Malik Langham (Vanderbilt); DE Jeffrey M’Ba (Auburn); CB Braxton Myers (Ole Miss); DT Isaiah Nichols (Arkansas)

MAC (2): OL Jalen Grant (Bowling Green); CB Zeke Williams

Pac-12 (2): QB Bennett Meredith (Arizona State); CB Salim Turner-Muhammad (Stanford)

NAIA (2): OT Bakyne Coly (Lawrence Tech); OL Ben Farrell (Indiana Wesleyan)

Big Ten (1): CB Marquis Wilson (Penn State)

Big 12 (1): QB Hudson Card (Texas)

Mountain West (1): OL Preston Nichols (UNLV)

PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

• From all accounts, Purdue’s Westlalapalozza event earlier this week went well. It was more of a fun gathering of recruits primarily from the Class of 2025.

The staff and recruits had a paintball battle on Saturday. There also was a pool party at Ryan Walters house on Friday. On Monday, there were games like dodge ball and relay races. They also played video games, had a water balloon fight and there were food trucks afterwards.

• Who were the top recruits in attendance?

2025 EDGE Justin Hill of Winton Woods High in Cincinnati
2025 LB Grant Beerman of Lakota West High in West Chester, Ohio
2025 EDGE Derry Norris of Spruce Creek High in Port Orange, Fla.
2025 IOL Raphael Greene of Winton Woods High in Cincinnati
2025 EDGE Cedric Works of Northmont High in Dayton, Ohio
2025 DL Joseph Reiff of York High in Elmhurst, Ill.
2025 ATH Andre Lovett of Eisenhower High in Blue Island, Ill.
2025 WR Teaunn Hunter of Wayne High in Dayton, Ohio
2025 DB Jussiah Williams-West of Wayne High in Dayton, Ohio
2025 IOL Michael McDonough of Victor J. Andrew High in Tinley Park, Ill.

All of the above have been offered, with McDonough earning one while on his visit.

• Incoming freshman Mondrell Dean will begin his career at running back. He also projected as an EDGE and LB. The staff is still deciding what positions fellow Class of 2023 signees Derrick Rogers and Arhmad Branch will play.

• Purdue added WR Shamar Rigby to its 2024 class, getting a commitment on Tuesday evening. He’s the second wideout in the class, joining Jesse Watson. Purdue could add at least more wideout in this class.

• Kentucky OL Demeco Kennedy visited last week. The 2024 recruit will take an OV to Illinois this weekend. Still, it’s thought Kennedy–who attends the same high school as current Boilermaker NT Jamarrion Harkless–could be leaning to Purdue.

• Could Purdue pull off a Cincinnati double-double? 2024 DB Koy Beasley–from LaSalle High–announced on social media he will commit on June 28. His final four: Pitt, Purdue, Wisconsin and Rutgers. 2024 WR Tra’Mar Harris also is a native of Cincinnati (Winton Woods High). He has winnowed his schools to Michigan State, Indiana, Cincinnati, Liberty and Purdue. It is thought that Purdue feels good with where it sits with both Queen City prospects.

• 2024 CB William Nettles of Dallas Christian School is expected to announce his commitment in early July. He announced his top three today: Purdue, Nebraska and SMU. Purdue seems well-positioned with him.

PURDUE BASKETBALL

Not sure anything in finalized yet, but instead of a closed scrimmage this season, Purdue has been working toward setting a trip to Arkansas for a public “charity” game like the one it hosted against Indiana State a few years back.

This would be an actual game, though it wouldn’t count.

Matt Painter has generally looked for problematic-matchup teams for these events, and Arkansas’ high-pressure style would align with that thinking. (BN)

PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING

Trent Burns‘ official visit ended Wednesday, and of course the visit went well. He’s a high-academic sort of guy so between that and the basketball part of it, Purdue likely was appealing. But this was only his first official visit and the fallout from the Purdue offer may have hinted at things to come. As soon as Purdue offered, Missouri and Stanford followed suit, joining Texas A&M, Nebraska and a bunch of others.

You can get he will have a lot of people watching him at the Peach Jam in July and 7-foot-2 alone will get him offers. If he plays well, more offers. So things could just be starting here. Purdue should be a factor for him, though.

Funny how quick things happened here, as Burns is a fast-rising prospect who Purdue found out about from a low-major staff who’d been recruiting him as an underclassman.

• This weekend is the annual Charlie Hughes Shootout, the main event of the second June evaluation period in Indiana. Among the Purdue targets and commitments playing there: Kanon Catchings, Jack Benter, Trent Sisley, Jalen Haralson and Dezmon Briscoe.

Purdue will also be out at events in Cartersville, Ga. (Gicarri Harris), Edwardsville, Ill. (Travis Perry) and Duncanville, Texas (Burns). There will be others at those events, too, I’m sure. (BN)
