Blue Chips: Developments with Top 100 Michigan DB target Zaquan Patterson

Blue Chips: Developments with Top 100 Michigan DB target Zaquan Patterson

*** I’m told Top 100 Miami (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna safety Zaquan Patterson may not make it to the BBQ at The Big House next week as initially planned. Obviously, this is an interesting development since Michigan appeared to be gaining some steam in this recruitment. Michigan co-defensive coordinator and area recruiter Steve Clinkscale and safeties coach Jay Harbaugh have both done a fantastic job of recruiting Patterson and impressing him with their pitches on scheme fit and having an opportunity to make an early impact. But it certainly would have been nice to get him back to campus.

*** The June visit was the first time Patterson’s mother was able to make her way to Ann Arbor. I’m told the Wolverines did enough to move the needle with her — to the point where she is comfortable giving her blessing if Patterson decided to leave home. However, I’m told others in Patterson’s corner aren’t completely sold on Michigan just yet. It seems like there is plenty of pressure for him to stay closer to home and play for Miami. The Hurricanes have also made him a top target and are making sure he feels the love.

*** This is where Michigan staffer Denard Robinson and Top 100 2025 cornerback commit Chris Ewald come in. Robinson is a legend in South Florida and had plenty of success during his time in Ann Arbor. Robinson was very involved in Patterson’s last visit, and I expect him to be even more involved this time around. Ewald, who actually attended Robinson’s youth camps growing up, spurned Miami for Michigan early in the process. Ewald is very, very close to Patterson as the two play for the same high school and club 7v7 team.

*** Patterson does not have a decision timeline. I’m told he is still debating between making the call in August or taking it the distance. Miami remains the biggest threat here, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes another trip there next week. Another school really moving the needle for Patterson is Auburn, which is quietly making a run. In fact, it looks like Patterson will be at Auburn’s Big Cat weekend as opposed to the BBQ at The Big House. It will be interesting to see what comes out of that visit. Florida State and Ohio State are still hanging around as well.
