Billy Napier lists starting center Kingsley Eguakun as questionable

Florida starting center Kingsley Eguakun is questionable for the Gators’ Week 1 game Thursday versus Utah, head coach Billy Napier said Monday.

Jake Slaughter is listed as the backup center on team’s depth chart, which was released Monday as well.

Eguakun picked up a lower body injury in practice recently that has caused these injury concerns.

“Kingsley is to be determined. I think he’s day-to-day. We do like the progress that he’s making,” Napier said on Friday. “He’s gotten a little bit incrementally better as we go here, and certainly he’s a very veteran player, too. I think that’s part of the equation.”

He isn’t the only one to be named on an injury report heading into the game. Running Cam Carroll and EDGE Justus Boone are both out for the game. Backup quarterback Jack Miller and defensive tackle Chris McClellan are both questionable for the Week 1 battle.

Eguakun, who enters the season as the leader of the offensive line and one of the leaders of the offense, has started every game at center the past two seasons. He was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List earlier in the month.

During SEC Media Day, Eguakun explained his team and personal goals for the season.

“I got a lot of personal goals,” Eguakun said. “But let me start with we want to win the SEC East. Obviously, I want to win the Rimington Award. I want to get drafted high, all that good stuff. But my main personal goal is I want to win games. That’s bottom line. I don’t like losing. I really hate losing more than I like winning, to be honest with you. I just want to win games. If none of that other stuff comes, but we win all our games, I’m a happy camper.”
