Big Blue Wall might not fully return in 2024 but could take a massive step in the right direction

Kentucky is not shying away from what they want to be on offense. The only way to get there is by re-establishing the Big Blue Wall standard. Will that happen in 2024?

Throughout the offseason, head coach Mark Stoops and his coaching staff have talked ad nauseam about getting back to becoming physically dominant upfront and pushing around defensive fronts. It happened before the 2023 season ended. It occurred during spring practice. It occurred during talking season. Kentucky’s goal seems clear.

The Wildcats want to run the damn ball.

“We were at our best… when the entire stadium knew we were going to run the ball and we still ran the ball for some success. There are critical moments and you’re still going to need to do that,” Stoops said at media day. “Sometimes when you are bleeding the clock or trying to win the game in a four‑minute offense, you have to be tough and physical and run the ball when everybody knows you are going to run the ball.”

Kentucky could not do that the last two years finishing ranked No. 105 (2022) and No. 93 (2023) in rushing success rate. However, each of those seasons included offenses that didn’t involve the quarterback in the traditional run game. That will change under new offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan but the Wildcats still need to run the ball with efficiency in the traditional running game. Much of that will fall on the offensive line.

Eric Wolford has returned to Lexington and is inheriting a room that has three players with over 1,000 career snaps played. Courtland Ford and Dylan Ray are both north of 600 and each of them is expected to come off the bench with Florida transfer Jalen Farmer in the lead for the starting right guard position. In the offseason, Kentucky signed four high school prospects and added three total transfers. Tennessee transfer Gerald Mincey is expected to join Farmer on the right side and junior college transfer Anfernee Crease gives this unit more depth at tackle. Marques Cox enters the year as one of the best returning left tackles in the SEC. Eli Cox will be a four-year starter this fall. Kentucky is old. Kentucky is experienced. Will that equal better play?

Kentucky’s coaching staff is publicly expressing confidence in this group.

“There’s the comfort feeling when you talk about Eli Cox at center and what he can do and the amount of games he’s played in,” Hamdan told KSR on Friday. “Certainly feel good about those guys.”

Kentucky’s offensive line is in the best position it’s been in since 2021. The unit has the most quality/experienced depth it’s had since John Schlarman was on the coaching staff. That needs to pay off this fall.

Is the Big Blue Wall run from 2016-21 returning where Kentucky led the SEC in rushing yards and yards per rush in 2019, finished top-five in rushing yards in three consecutive years (2019-21), and averaged at least 196 yards per game five times (2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021)? That would seem difficult but maybe the change in scheme can make a big difference in this rushing attack.

Much of the narrative surrounding this offense has to do with the offensive line. If you ask anyone in the program, the finger is almost quickly directed at the line of scrimmage when discussing this offense reaching its potential. Kentucky has made some logical and sensible steps to fix the problem and appears to have raised the floor. But how high is this group’s ceiling?

We will not know the answer to that question until the games start but the pieces are in place for Kentucky’s offensive line to take a step forward. That needs to happen because more transfer portal roster-building will be required in the offseason as Wolford attempts to stack quality young players through high school recruiting. Another semi-rebuild is coming in the offensive line room in December.

If the Wildcats cannot carve out solid-to-good offensive line play this season, it feels fair to wonder if anything close to the Big Blue Wall era will return anytime soon. Kentucky needs this shift to a new college-friendly scheme that will include variations in tempo, more spread formations, and a designed QB run game to pay off. If this system cannot produce improvement with the experience and depth that Kentucky has on the line of scrimmage, then the criticism might need to switch away from the personnel and to the offensive philosophy.

The Wildcats have to get better offensive line play but the new offensive structure needs to create a system where success can be accomplished. All of the pieces there for this group to show improvement even if the ceiling might not be very high.

“Certainly needs to be a really solid group for us with the amount of starts those guys have made,” Hamdan said.
