Big 12 commit set for first-ever Gators visit

When speaking with Gators Online last month, Ashton Jones spoke highly of Florida and said there was no doubt the SEC program would receive a visit.

After reconnecting with the Baylor wide receiver commit on Monday, GO learned of his plans to set foot in Gainesville. It will be for the Orange and Blue Game.

Representing Pearland (Texas) Shadow Creek, Jones is the 82nd-ranked wide receiver in the On3 rankings.

“I will be there this weekend,” Jones told Gators Online.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound junior is establishing a strong connection with wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales after earning an offer in January. He is also intrigued by the Gators’ future under center, as DJ Lagway is someone he previously played pitch and catch with during the offseason.

Jones’ commitment to the Bears is strong, but Florida is one pushing hardest to change his mind.

“Florida is just one of those schools where if you have a chance to play there, you take to look at it for sure,” Jones previously told GO. “My guy DJ (Lagway) is there, one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Lastly, I really just want to see how coach G is as a coach and person and what his development plans for me as a player would be.

“He hits me up about every other day to check on me. We had a great conversation when he came to visit my school in Houston. He believes I’m way better than what people think and I like that a lot.”

Additional offers on the table for Jones include Oregon, Minnesota, Houston, Arizona State, Washington State and Vanderbilt.

According to MaxPreps, Jones hauled in 29 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns as a junior. He reports a time of 4.40 in the 40-yard dash.
