Better than ever? 5-star safety commit KJ Bolden recaps ‘amazing’ Florida State visit
KJ Bolden has been to Florida State many times through the years, going back to when he was a youth attending FSU football camps, and it has always felt like home.
This past weekend was Bolden’s first time visiting as a Florida State commit. And the five-star safety said that might have been the coolest experience yet.
“It was crazy,” Bolden said of his visit for FSU’s game against Virginia Tech. “When you come here uncommitted … it’s a great experience. But when you come back committed, it’s different — probably a better experience. Everybody knows you, and everybody wants a picture and autographs. So it was just like amazing everywhere I went.”
It didn’t hurt that the environment for Saturday’s game was outstanding, with beautiful weather and a sold-out crowd watching the undefeated and Top 5-ranked Seminoles in action.
“It was great. You know, we’ve got the best fan base in America, so everyone is just excited seeing us back on top winning again. It’s just overall a great feeling,” said Bolden, the nation’s No. 1 safety. “Just seeing the fans, the chant, the most famous chant in college football right now. And just seeing [sold-out crowds] … that just tells you that you’ve got the best fan base and they always want to see you and be there and support the guys. …
“We’re back winning now.”
Bolden has caused a minor stir in recent weeks by taking visits to Auburn and Georgia. But the five-star recruit, who is rated the No. 8 prospect overall in the country, made it clear that he is firm with the Seminoles.
“I’m committed to Florida State,” Bolden said. “I’m here right now. But going through the recruitment process, you only get to one time. So you’re gonna go visit other schools. … Overall, I’m really committed to Florida State right now. I don’t even text other schools or stuff like that. I just go watch the game and stuff, but right now, I’m right there with the ‘Noles.”
The Buford, Ga., star said he is planning to visit for at least a couple more Florida State games this season. He listed Miami for sure, and said he might be back for the Duke game if quarterback Riley Leonard is playing.
One FSU player who really stood out to Bolden on Saturday was freshman safety Conrad Hussey. Even though Hussey has only been on campus since the summer, he has already worked his way into the defensive back rotation and made several impressive plays against Virginia Tech.
That is obviously a good sign in Bolden’s eyes.
“He’s a dog. I knew he was going to play like that,” Bolden said. “Watching him in practice and stuff like that, he always makes plays like that. … Seeing him make plays, I would just like to come in here next year and make some plays with him.”
Bolden said he likely will continue attending other college football games this fall, with the Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama being the only one he mentioned specifically.
