Bengals executive makes prediction on Joe Burrow’s contract

Quarterbacks around the NFL must be licking their chops for what the going rate for good production at that position is at these days. That includes Cincinnati Bengal QB Joe Burrow as he nears the end of his rookie deal.

Based on what Duke Tobin recently said, Burrow has every reason to be excited. Tobin, Cincy’s director of player personnel, spoke about the Bengal quarterback’s extension talks in an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show last week. He said it’s all a lot to consider with how they’re distributing paychecks. However, when it comes to Burrow, he will be receiving ‘a sizable amount’ of their monetary pie.

“We’ve looked at a lot of different things. (Executive VP Katie Blackburn) is the one that keeps us on track with the salary cap. Not only for this year but for future years,” Tobin said. “Everything we do, and we’re looking now, but these dollars count. If you’re not counting them this year? You’re gonna count them next year, and the year after. So every dollar that goes out counts.”

“It’s a pie. Just how big of a piece of the pie? The only thing I can predict with the contract is it’s gonna be a sizable amount of money,” said Tobin. “He’s not going to be asking any of you for loans anytime soon. He’ll be paid well and he’s earned it.”

Burrow just completed his third NFL season with the Bengals. In his trio of seasons, he has thrown for over 11,700 passing yards and 82 touchdowns on an efficient 68.2% completion percentage. His development has really kicked off over the last two years though. After tearing his ACL and MCL as a rookie, he has come back to lead Cincinnati to a pair of AFC Championship games and one appearance in the Super Bowl.

As the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Burrow signed a four-year deal worth $36 million. Now, with how quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts have recently been paid, many expect his next deal to easily be worth at least $50 million per season.

The question for Cincinnati is how much can they give him and still keep a competitive team around him? It’s a lot of number crunching but, for now, their only focus is inking Burrow to a new, massive deal. They can solve any other problems when it comes to roster construction afterward once he’s in place for the Bengals moving forward.
