Behind the Ranking: Deep dive into Ohio State’s 2025 class
COLUMBUS — Ohio State holds the top-ranked 2025 recruiting class in the On3 Team Industry Rankings.
The Buckeyes’ 2025 class is shaping up to be a special one and can certainly compete with the 2021 class, which finished second. The class’s average score is 94.31 and has an average player rating of 92.39.
On3 recently updated its 2025 player rankings and a few other industry services updated theirs as well. Lettermen Row takes a few moments to analyze the numbers behind the class.
Three Five-Star Plus+ Commits
Ohio State leads the country with five-star Plus+ commits. Cornerbacks Devin Sanchez and Na’eem Offord, and quarterback Tavien St. Clair have the distinct honor of being five-star Plus+ prospects.
A five-star Plus+ prospect is when a recruit is ranked as a five-star by all major recruiting services — On3, 24/7, Rivals and ESPN.
Sanchez is the No. 4 overall prospect, St. Clair is the No. 8 overall prospect and Offord is the No. 9 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings. Those adjust to No. 9, No. 15 and No. 8, respectively, by On3.
St. Clair has certainly been the biggest riser over the journey of his recruitment. He started as a three-star and not even ranked inside the top 300. Slowly he climbed the rankings. When he committed to Ohio State in June 2023 he was the No. 285 overall prospect. Now over a year later, he’s the No. 15 prospect.
Sanchez has always been one of the 2025 cycle’s biggest and best talents. He was first mentioned by On3 Director of Recruiting Charles Power in the 2025 watch list, which was published on August 15, 2022. Although he was highly mentioned, he didn’t earn his fifth star from On3 until this winter.
Offord was one of the first five-star prospects On3 named and while his overall ranking has fluctuated a few spots, that fifth star has always been by his name.
Most Top-100 commits in a class
Ohio State has another impressive feat for its 2025 class. The Buckeyes have 10 prospects ranked inside the top 100, which leads the country. In order it goes No. 4 Devin Sanchez, No. 8 Tavien St. Clair, No. 9 Na’eem Offord, No. 34 Riley Pettijohn, No. 45 Carter Lowe, No. 46 Faheem Delane, No. 49 Quincy Porter, No. 63 Zahir Mathis, No. 67 Tarvos Alford and No. 77 Bo Jackson.
The only other program that comes close to that is Alabama with eight.
Analyzing In-State Talent
Head coach Ryan Day has made recruiting Ohio a top-tier priority. There’s a good argument to be made Day has established a solid middle ground of what Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer did on the recruiting trail.
The Buckeyes have eight in-state commits committed to their 2025 class. The headliners certainly are St. Clair, Lowe and Jackson, but don’t sleep on the guys behind them. Eli Lee and Cody Haddad are two very impressive defensive prospects whose rankings may not accurately reflect what Ohio State sees in them. Particularly Haddad who missed most of his junior season because of an injury.
Four-star Cleveland (Ohio) Gilmour Academy tight end Brody Lennon went from unranked to No. 137 by On3 in the latest recruiting rankings update. And three-star Mansfield (Ohio) Ontario wide receiver Bodpegn Miller has an incredibly high ceiling after two dazzling camp performances at Ohio State this summer.
And we can’t forget about three-star Westerville (Ohio) North IOL Jake Cook. He has worked tirelessly in pursuit of an Ohio State offer and once he got it, he wasted no time in committing to the Buckeyes. That work ethic and drive will serve him well at the next level.
