Auburn Recruiting Insider: Offensive notes and intel from the bye week
While Auburn coaches spent time self-evaluating on the field, they also were able to put more emphasis on the recruiting trail. That was a major point of emphasis for the weekend. There is plenty of new intel to discuss from the weekend.
NCAA Evaluation Period
For those who are unaware, the entire NCAA is currently in an “Evaluation Period” until Nov. 26, 2023. Here is a full explanation of what this period is according to ncsasports.org.
The NCAA Evaluation Period is a specific time of year when college coaches are allowed to watch an athlete compete in person or visit their school. However, coaches are not allowed to communicate with that athlete (or parents) off the college campus. Coaches can sit in the stands during a recruit’s practice or game, as well as visit the recruit’s school. This gives college coaches a chance to talk to the recruit’s coach, teachers or guidance counselor to get a better understanding of the student-athlete’s character. After the visit, the coach may call or email the recruit and let them know how their experience was at the school or game.
Running back
— Auburn has not moved on from 4-star Miami running back commit Kevin Riley by any means. However, the Tigers have a better shot with 4-star Clemson running back commit David Eziomume, and they know it. Auburn had a foot in the door when Eziomume reached out about visiting for Samford. Now, with a Georgia game invite from Auburn and another visit, Auburn is trying to break down the door. Auburn has become a major threat to flip according to our intel. There is no known timeline, which could make this a tougher job than it already is.
Wide receiver
— Auburn is not done recruiting new Miami wide receiver commit Ny Carr. In fact, it has been known that Carr was probably going to make the move to Miami even when he visited Auburn for the Georgia game. Auburn will work to weather this storm and try to flip Carr again. The Tigers think he is that good and worth the work. As of right now, of course, Miami has a major lead.
— It is becoming more likely that Auburn puts some heat on JUCO wide receiver Deion Smith, the former LSU player. A major emphasis moving forward will be for receivers who can win contested balls. Smith has been pretty good at that and is a taller receiver at 6-foot-2 170 pounds.
Tight end
— As of today, it feels like an Auburn-Oregon battle for tight end Roger Saleapaga from Orem (Utah). While he has not named a top two, or a leader, it seems Oregon could be the team to beat. Getting Saleapaga on campus should not be overlooked for Auburn, however. Auburn is in this one, but we label Oregon as the team to overcome for now, and it probably won’t be easy.
— Probably the biggest intel of the past week is with 4-star Florida tight end commit Amir Jackson. Jackson visited Auburn for the Georgia game. That visit was no run-of-the-mill visit according to our intel. Jackson is interested in Auburn and will more than likely be back. He has yet to take an official visit to Auburn, and that is on the table as well. Auburn made a big move with Jackson over the last week we are told. A big move.
Offensive line (Quick-Hitters)
— Auburn feels pretty good about holding on to commit DeAndre Carter from Santa Ana (Cali.) Mater Dei. It does not feel great at last check, but certainly not bad about its chances. There was a good talk between staff and the Carter family after his official visit to Texas. Carter plans to stay committed to Auburn. The Texas push will not end. It will be a fight to hold on to Carter.
— Things are going great with Favour Edwin, a 3-star offensive tackle from McDonough (Ga.) Eagles Landing Christian. He is set to be back for the Iron Bowl and maybe every other home game at Auburn.
— Things are going great with Kahlil House, an offensive lineman committed to Stanford. We project him to be in Auburn’s class at this time.
— Coen Echols is one of the main flip targets Auburn will not give up on. At last check, there is at least some optimism on the Auburn side that it has a chance.
— There has been very little chatter about Reese Baker, Jude Foster, and TJ Lockhart. There has been much more chatter on the JUCO offensive linemen: Jayven Richardson and Andrew Dennis.
