Auburn fall camp practice observations: August 3

Auburn fall camp practice observations: August 3

AUBURNAuburn football fall camp officially took to the practice field on Thursday. It is the first fall camp practice under head coach Hugh Freeze and his staff.

Auburn Live was able to view a window of the practice. Here is what we saw while observing the first fall camp practice.

The following are Auburn Live’s fall camp practice observations. It will be a guessing game early on to see where players are on the depth chart, so we will give perceived first group and second group lineups.

Offense

— After walkthroughs on offense and defense, they cranked the music up and went into stretching.

— Offense worked on drills with routes on air and the offensive line going through protections.

— Working with what looked to be the 1’s at receiver: Jay Fair, Ja’Varrius Johnson, Camden Brown, Malcolm Johnson Jr.

— Working with what looked to be the 2’s: Shane Hooks, Jyaire Shorter, Caleb Burton, Omari Kelly

— First group at offensive line: Dillon Wade, Tate Johnson, Avery Jones, Kam Stutts and Gunner Britton.

— Second group included Jeremiah Wright, Connor Lew among others that were not identified. (It was a quick run-through).

— Was unable to see much of the quarterbacks. They started throwing when media was taken back to the lobby.

Defense

— Defense went straight into blitz walkthrough after special teams.

— What looks to be the first group in the front seven walkthrough: Elijah McCallister, Marcus Harris (3-tech), Jayson Jones, Mo NK (5-tech). Austin Keys and Cam Riley were at the linebacker spots.

— Maybe the second group: Faulk, Rogers, L. Johnson, Woodyard, Asante, McLeod.. Faulk playing with hand on the ground as 5-tech

— Good to see JD Rhym back in action. He is easily the most rangy corner on the roster. Long arms, long legs, and should be ready to contribute.

— It looks like Keionte Scott, Sylvester Smith, and Austin Ausberry are working in at nickel. Colton Hood also had a rep or two there, but mostly working as an outside corner.

— Keldric Faulk continues to be one of the more impressive frames I have seen on a football field, period. He is probably not done filling out either.

New guys

— There was a new defensive lineman wearing No. 97 on the field, I am told that was Quientrail “Bobby” Travis.

— TJ Johnson, a true freshman offensive lineman from Louisiana, was an impressive specimen with the offensive line. He may be the tallest of the offensive line group.

— Cannot confirm if Dylan Senda was at practice, but he should be wearing No. 71.

— JC Hart is impressive off-the-hoof. He was working at corner primarily.

— Colton Hood was moving around a good bit.. Looked like he played a few snaps as a nickel but primarily worked at outside corner.

— Sylvester Smith was working directly behind Keionte Scott at the nickel position. It looked as though Donovan Kaufman was at safety more than nickel, but he will bounce around.

— Tyler Scott was working behind JD Rhym for a good majority of practice at what looked to be a corner position.

— Jyaire Shorter looks the part. He is massive at the receiver position. Looks more like a tight end.

— Shane Hooks is the rangiest receiver on the roster. He is tall and long and looks impressive playing outside receiver.

— Caleb Burton bursts out of his stance very well from the snap. He was playing both slot and outside receiver.

— Jeremiah Cobb looks the part.. I was concerned about him earlier in his career, he was a smaller guy. Total body transformation from him already.. Probably close to 200 pounds.
