Atlanta 2025 DL remembers Clowney
A pair of South Carolina Gamecocks coaches dropped by Woodward Academy in Atlanta and offered a big-time defender from the program.
“They came to one of our morning workouts. It was Coach (Sterling) Lucas and Coach (Travian) Robertson,” London Merritt told GamecockCentral.com. “They like to see their players in person before they offer, so they came to check me out.”

While Merritt still has a lot to learn about Shane Beamer’s program, he does recall watching one of the team’s all-time greats.
“I don’t know too much, but I do know one of my favorite players, Jadeveon Clowney, went to South Carolina. He was a beast. He went first round, first pick, in the NFL Draft. I know they can produce good d-linemen.”
Merritt lists himself as an athlete, but it appears that programs – including South Carolina – are recruiting him to be a pass-rusher at the next level.
“I’ll probably be playing EDGE or an outside linebacker position, d-end, stand-up,” he explained. “I’m very versatile. I can play pretty much any position on the field: running back, tight end, receiver, Probably not corner, but I can cover in the flat. I can play all over the line.
The On3 Industry Ranking – a weighted average of all four major recruiting services – rates Merritt as the nation’s number 75 prospect nationally for the 2025 class. He’s additionally ranked as the number 9 defensive lineman in the country and the 13th-best prospect in the state of Georgia.’

The 6-foot-2, 235-pounder carries a who’s who of offers, a list that also includes Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, Ohio State, Penn State, LSU, Texas, Michigan, Oklahoma, Southern Cal, and numerous others.
As he continues the process of sorting through a group of very strong options, Merritt knows what he wants to focus on during the search.
“First, I just want to build a relationship with my position coach and some of the staff,” he said. “I want to feel at home and family, community. I like to check out the program and see how interested they are in me.”
