Arkansas running back weighs in on Dowell Loggains, Trey Knox

Raheim Sanders has a few more connections to South Carolina than just having played the Gamecocks in week two last season.

Sanders was teammates the last few years with South Carolina tight end Trey Knox, who came over via the transfer portal, and saw how new Gamecocks offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains.

And Wednesday he weighed in on both during the Razorbacks’ trip through SEC Media Days. While he wasn’t in the meeting rooms with Loggains, he left impressed with what he saw.

“He was a great guy and he knew offense well,” Sanders said Wednesday. “(He taught) me some things as well just blocking-wise.”

Loggains spent the last two seasons at Arkansas where he coached the tight ends. Shane Beamer hired the former NFL play caller this offseason to replace offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains.

He takes over quarterback coaching duties and with the expectation of taking a step forward offensively this season.

Players, at least from spring conversations, were pleased with what Loggains brought in March and April.

“While I was making the decision he was basically telling me what kind of offense we were going to run and how he was going to find different ways to get the ball in my hands. Now, that’s my dog,” Juice Wells said in the spring.

“He’s just a cool guy. He’s a good guy to be around and he’s got high spirits. I love the way he coaches. I love the way he’s finding new ways to get playmakers the ball in space. It’s great. I feel good. Everyone’s happy right now.”

Sanders, though, also weighed in on Knox, who comes over from Arkansas and being in Loggains’ tight end room there.

“Trey Knox, I feel like he was a physical guy, very physical guy,” Sanders said. “Just not scared to do blocking things. He knew the plays. Great guy that can catch. Would love to play any position. I feel like he was a great guy.”

Knox was a four-star recruit and the No. 232 player in the rankings coming out of high school as a receiver but made the switch to tight end recently.

Over his four years before South Carolina, he caught 81 passes for 883 yards and nine touchdowns. Of those, 26 catches, 287 yards and five scores came last season.

He’ll be expected to be a big piece of a Gamecocks offense needing production from the tight ends this season.
