Antonio Reeves shares expectations for Toronto trip

The Kentucky Wildcats are in Canada, getting some live reps in, while other teams are enjoying their summers. What are they doing north of the border? Participating in the 2023 GLOBL JAM event being held in Toronto. While the Wildcats players are preparing for their upcoming opening game of the event, a July 12 matchup against Germany, the team at KSR spoke with some players, gauging what they expect to get out of this trip. The team’s elder statesman, guard Antonio Reeves, wasn’t particularly focused on his expectations, more so on what the trip meant for the incoming group of players.
“Really, just being a leader out there, still being me,” said Reeves. “Still being Antonio at the end of the day. But looking out for the young guys. Just making sure whatever they’re doing wrong, whatever they don’t know, I’m there for them and, you know, provide for them as well. And winning games. Definitely win all three games that we’re playing.”
Per the norm with a John Calipari lead program, Kentucky is bringing in so top-end talent from the 2023 class. Three of this year’s recruits are Five-Star Plus+ ranked players in Justin Edwards, Aaron Bradshaw, and DJ Wagner Jr., as well as three elite four-stars, Robert Dillingham, Jordan Burks, and Reed Sheppard. All that talent will need to quickly get on the same page and merge seamlessly into Calipari’s system before the start of the season, which is why this trip to Toronto is significant. Good thing they will have a veteran like Reeves around to help them get acclimated to things at Kentucky.
Tre Mitchell shares initial feelings on being at Kentucky
Not mentioned in the pool of incoming talent above was the Wildcats’ recent transfer portal acquisition from West Virginia Tre Mitchell. Mitchell is with the team in Canada for the GLOBL JAM. And the new Wildcats forward shared his initial feelings about being at Kentucky.
“You know it speaks for itself,” said Mitchell. “Kentucky basketball has always been something that has stood out to me as a player. I’ve just been through a kind of a different route in my life to get me here. But at the end of the day, once I entered my name in the portal and Coach Cal reached out, it’s the kind of an opportunity that’s hard to pass up on.”
Mitchell has been a bit of a journeyman in his collegiate basketball career. Before heading to Kentucky this off season, he had played for three schools prior: UMass, Texas, and the previously mentioned West Virginia.
Last season with the Mountaineers, Mitchell was a starter in 32 of the 34 games he played. The six-foot-nine forward went on to finish the year averaging 11.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.
