Andrew Carr explains choosing Kentucky
Andrew Carr is one of nine transfers who came out of the portal and to Kentucky this offseason. For him, it was much of the same in the breakdown of his decision as to why he wanted to become a Wildcat.
Carr explained his choice of Kentucky during a recent media availability on Thursday last week. Simply put, UK offered him everything that he was wanting all at a place that was unlike many, if any, others.
“You know, this is a really special place,” said Carr.
“I think, for me, I knew what I was looking for when I went into the transfer portal and this is a combination of everything that kind of came together for me,” Carr said.
That began for Carr with what he could bring to the court for Mark Pope and Kentucky. He credited the staff for conveying how he could look playing for them as well as how they want to continue to develop his game in his final collegiate season.
“First and foremost, it was the basketball fit,” Carr said. “I think Coach Pope did a really great job, you know, showing me how I would fit within the team in the recruitment and just the way that I’ve been able to play. But also it has been really cool for me to say, ‘Hey, you need to get better at this and this and this is how we can help you do that.’”
“You know, for someone who is trying to continue to get better? Obviously has aspirations to go play in the NBA? That’s all you want to hear when you’re in the recruitment process,” Carr said. “That was really cool to understand my fit.”
Carr will be a graduate student after two seasons apiece at Delaware and Wake Forest. In 117 career games, he has averaged 11 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 blocks. He did so while shooting 51.6% overall and 34.4% from three. That includes his final year with the Demon Deacons where he posted a career year at 13.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks on 52.6% shooting from the field and 37.1% from deep.
Carr now arrives as the No. 62 overall transfer, which makes him fifth amongst the near dozen for UK. He also rates as the No. 15 SF.
However, Lexington also played its part in getting Carr to commit. He appreciated the fans in the bluegrass while also respecting the history of the program in his decision.
“Then the second part was just the embracement from the fans, you know,” Carr added. “I think Big Blue Nation – I’ve said it before. It’s just different, you know.”
“I think it’s a really special place and been my dream ever since a little kid,” said Carr. “Coming on and watching basketball, you always hear about Kentucky, Kentucky Basketball. You watch Kentucky Basketball and you know you want to be a Kentucky Basketball player.”
Carr was one of the bigger additions out of the portal this spring for Kentucky. It ended up being a clear choice for him too with what all the Wildcats offered for his last year.
