Analyzing Oklahoma State’s chances in the Big 12 race

Analyzing Oklahoma State’s chances in the Big 12 race

When discussing contenders in the Big 12 this season, you are not hearing about Oklahoma State too much. Texas is pegged as the favorite, while Kansas State is looking to repeat as champions. On3’s J.D. PicKell has dubbed Texas Tech as a dark horse and of course, there is always the Oklahoma factor. But the in-state rival Cowboys are not receiving a ton of love.

However, if there is one reason PicKell is going to bet on Oklahoma State, it’s because of head coach Mike Gundy. Time and time again, Gundy has found ways to win football games. The program’s last losing season came in 2005, Gundy’s first year in charge.

“If you’re betting on Oklahoma State, you’re betting with Mike Gundy,” PicKell said. “That’s not a bad bet to make. Mike Gundy has proven, year in and year out, he’s going to win some ball games. I don’t know if I like Oklahoma State as I have in years past… If you’re saying they’re a dark horse, I would listen but I am not buying a ton of Oklahoma State stock for this upcoming season.”

Gundy has built up the respect of one of the Big 12’s best head coaches but the doubts about Oklahoma State exist for a reason. A total of 18 players left via the NCAA transfer portal, with a few being projected impact players. Linebacker Mason Cobb left for USC and EDGE Trace Ford will play for Oklahoma this season.

None were as big of a name as Spencer Sanders though. He had been the starting quarterback in Stillwater for quite some time but is now battling out for the Ole Miss job. PicKell thinks Sanders’ departure leaves quarterback uncertainty.

“I would be asking who’s going to be playing quarterback for Oklahoma State,” Gundy said. “I don’t know if they even have a solid feel on that internally.”

Alan Bowman was brought into the program, formally of Texas Tech and Michigan. The fifth-year player has experience in the Big 12, throwing for 5,260 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions during his time with the Red Raiders.

Just once has Oklahoma State been in a Big 12 Championship game — one fans will not be forgetting anytime soon against Baylor. Wanting to get back to AT&T Stadium and create a new, happier memory is the goal this season.

Unfortunately, PicKell is not backing them to do so this season. There are a few teams fighting for the Big 12 title and problems mixed with QB uncertainty is a bad recipe.
