ANALYSIS: What Miami is getting in 4-star small forward Isaiah Johnson-Arigu

With the second commit of the 2024 class on the board after landing Minneapolis (Minn.) Totino-Grace four-star small forward Isaiah Johnson-Arigu, Miami Hurricanes head coach Jim Larranaga, and his staff are continuing to build what is shaping out to be one of the ‘Canes strongest recruiting classes in recent memory.

After beating out the likes of Iowa, Northwestern, Texas Tech, and Virginia Tech for Johnson-Arigu, who is the No. 106 overall prospect in the 2024 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, Larranaga and his staff couldn’t be happier with the talent they landed in the versatile small forward.

“(My) last but most intriguing offer,” Johnson-Arigu said prior to his commitment to the Hurricanes. “They are very intriguing, and the freedom they give their players is very similar to my game. With their recent winning and experience in the tournament, combined with positive and encouraging-minded coaches, it was added.”

As a junior, the 6-foot-7, 190-pounder averaged 12.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and 1 assist en route to a Minnesota AAA Section 4 state championship victory.

When looking to draw a comparison for Johnson-Arigu, an easy one would be former Miami Hurricanes forward Jordan Miller due to their similar size at 6-foot-7 and ability to play both the three and four positions with ease.

While the two share similar physical traits, their styles of play on the court are a bit different.

When you turn on Johnson-Arigu’s tape, one of the first things you notice is his ability to attack the basket and finish at the rim. He uses all of his 6-foot-7, 190-pound frame to maneuver his way to the basket for easy dunks and layups.

Along with his ability to score in the paint, Johnson-Arigu has shown that he is more than capable of stretching out the defense with his three-ball as well as the ability to hit a mid-range jumper, but those are two areas he will still need to improve moving forward.

Defensively, Johnson-Arigu is a versatile defender who has the ability to guard the one-through-four position at any given moment. Johnson-Arigu uses his length to his advantage at the rim and on the perimeter to block shots and clog up passing lanes. Johnson-Arigu is also a solid rebounder on the defensive glass and has shown the ability to get up the court quickly or find the outlet pass to create easy points in transition.
