Analysis: Could Miami commit Kavion Broussard be the Hurricanes’ next hidden gem?

It’s no secret Miami three-star commit Kavion Broussard is an under-the-radar prospect, but if the Hurricanes can help their latest commitment reach his potential, the Canes could have landed a potential all-conference selection.

Broussard’s measurables are off the chart — 6-foot-6, 253 pounds, tremendous length, moves with the agility of a tight end and fires off the football with speed and aggression — and he’s been a strong asset in pass protection and an above-average run blocker. If he reaches his ceiling, he could be a future NFL draft selection and a dominant offensive lineman.

He made the move from tight end to left tackle relatively easily as a junior and showed steady improvement as his season went on. He moved well as a pass blocker, although he faced few EDGEs who could match his raw size, and was able to consistently move defensive linemen off the line of scrimmage in the run game. He still moves with the agility of a tight end, runs well in space and is eager for plays to run behind him.

But he has plenty of room to develop heading into his senior season.

Broussard still needs to tack on additional muscle and weight, and he needs to improve his pad level. He can struggle against competition that can match his size, and opponents smaller but stronger than the No. 40 offensive tackle can give Broussard real trouble. His footwork still needs some cleaning up and consistency, although he’s fast and agile enough to handle most of his competition at the high school level.

He has encouraging bend for a prospect his size and communicates well with his fellow offensive linemen. Broussard generally does a good job keeping his hands inside and avoiding penalties, although he has a tendency to get sloppy when fatigued or overwhelmed by equally or more-talented pass rushers.

Ideally, redshirting his freshman season before vying for playing time his second year on campus should offer Broussard the best chance for success. He already has the natural size and mobility to be an elite offensive lineman, but with some additional weight and a season or two to develop at Greentree, he could become a multi-year starter. And if his talent reaches its potential, he could become an all-conference caliber player.

Broussard will benefit greatly from extended time in Miami’s weight room, nutrition facility and on the practice field, but he has as high a ceiling as any Hurricane offensive lineman if he becomes the player he’s capable of.
