An update on the recruiting trail on a 2025 target

Prior to the start of the 2023 season, I made some trips around the Dallas-Fort Worth area to check in on some of USC’s targets, primarily in the 2025 class. One of the prospects I made sure to see was Lucas (Tex.) Lovejoy tight end Bear Tenney, who moved to Texas from Arizona this offseason.

After talking with Tenney in the late summer, it was clear that USC was actively pursuing Tenney, who’s cousin in Trojans reserve quarterback Jake Jensen.

At the time, Tenney was planning to visit USC in the future as well as keeping an eye on the Trojans offense in the early going of the season. There was even a legitimate claim that USC was an early favorite for the three-star tight end.

A shift in Tenney’s recruitment

I made a drive on Friday to go check in on Tenney as his strong Lovejoy squad took on Princeton High School. The game was as lopsided as it could get, Lovejoy cruising to a 63-0 victory. Tenney reeled in a few receptions but was unable to find the endzone.

I spoke with him after the game to get the latest in his recruitment.

Tenney informed me that while there are a handful of schools pursuing him and in communication, USC has not been one of them of late. It appears the USC staff may be looking in a different direction than just a few months ago.

Based on the conversation with Tenney, USC does not sound like a school that will be active in his recruitment moving forward. Although it possible communication picks up again in the future.

It was just in August that Tenney released a top-12 of USC, Georgia, Auburn, Colorado, Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, Oregon, Penn State, Texas, Tennessee, and Utah.

Tenney ranks as the No. 433 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also tabs in as the No. 24 tight end and the No. 71 player in the state of Texas.
