Alabama to play in ReliaQuest Bowl after missing playoff

After missing the 2024 College Football Playoff, Alabama has been selected to participate in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan to close out its season, per Action Network’s Brett McMurphy.

The game will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on New Year’s Day, with a kickoff time set for 11 a.m. CT.

The Crimson Tide finished the regular season 9-3 with wins over three ranked teams in SEC champion Georgia, South Carolina and Missouri. Of Alabama’s three losses, one came to a ranked Tennessee, while the others came at the hands of unranked Vanderbilt and Oklahoma.

Michigan, coming off last season’s national championship, finished the season 7-5 and beat rival Ohio State as an underdog to close out the year. The Wolverines finished the year unranked by the CFP committee.

The CFP field was filled out by the five highest-ranked conference champions receiving auto-bids: Big Ten champion Oregon, SEC champion Georgia, Big 12 champion Arizona State, ACC champion Clemson, and Mountain West champion Boise State. The remaining at-large teams were Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Tennessee, Indiana and SMU.

This will be the third bowl game in the past five years where Alabama has played Michigan. The Crimson Tide beat the Wolverines 35-16 in the Citrus Bowl to conclude the 2019 season, while Michigan beat Alabama in the Rose Bowl in last year’s CFP semifinal game.
