Aguirre to start out playing WILL at Miami, has that Hurricanes mentality: “I’m coming, and I’m coming to take spots and the best man wins”
Fayetteville (Ga.) White Waters High School and Miami Hurricanes signee Raul Aguirre is excited to report to campus May 28 – he graduates two days prior. Aguirre’s preparing for his arrival by following a workout plan sent by Miami coaches, working with his trainer, running the 4×1 on the track team and even meeting up with fellow signee Marcellius Pulliam when their schedules allow it.
“He’s 15 minutes away, we get to it together when we can,” Aguirre said. “We get good field work in together. And every day I’m working out, running, go on the field.”
At 6-2, Aguirre currently weighs “228, 229” pounds, but says he will play at 225.
Aguirre says he’s excited for his UM arrival and is talking regularly with LB coach Derek Nicholson. He was supposed to spend time with Nicholson and the team during the Spring Game weekend, but his flight down was canceled due to the flooding in the area.
“The coaches, they reach out to me daily,” Aguirre said. “They just make sure I’m working.”
Aguirre says coaches will start him at WILL, and in high school he played all three linebacker spots.
“I’m happy to play wherever I can get on the field,” Aguirre said.
Fellow linebacker signees Malik Bryant and Bobby Washington, enrolled early, and they have a message for Aguirre: “They say it’s lit there and they are fired up and ready for me to get there,” Aguirre says.
Aguirre also might not be the only one from his family that winds up playing at Miami. His younger brother, Markel Aguirre, is a freshman and landed a Miami offer earlier this year. Tennessee is another big early offer for the 6-0, 180-pound DB/ATH.
“A lot of schools are after him, but Miami, he knows that’s where it’s at,” Popo says.
As for Aguirre’s goals in year 1 at Miami?
“Just get in there and grind, man,” he says. “I want to learn a lot, take everything I can get and learn from that and on top of that compete. That’s what we’re trying to bring back to Miami is competing. I feel that went away. Bring back dawgs that won’t go away, will fight for that starting spot. I’m coming, and I’m coming to take spots and the best man wins. Just having that motto and learning and working hard. That’s all it is.
“I want to pay attention to the small things. And of course be a freshman All-American.”
To do that Aguirre will need to make a fast and smooth transition to the next level.
“The speed, I’ll adjust fast to that,” he says. “For me it’s just the linemen being able to bounce off them and use my hands more. With the running backs and all that, since I’m doing a lot of tackling drills, breakdown drills, I’ll be in good shapes. I’m a great open field tackler, I feel I’ll be great with that. Get in their face and close ground and do the little things right. And be a leader. That’s what I want.”
