GamecockCentral.com caught up with South Carolina running backs Oscar Adaway and Jawarn Howell during the program’s media day last week.

Adaway on Howell: “Jawarn is a young back, he’s fresh, and I’m telling you, the talent is there. He can run the ball very efficiently, can catch the ball very efficiently. And one thing that he can do to a lot of people when they see him, they see his stature, right? They don’t understand that he can run through a lot of players in the third level and the second level, like linebackers as well. And h’s got great vision.

Adaway on Rocket Sanders: “I watch a lot of his tape. Just him being an SEC running back, you know, me being an SEC running back coming up this year, I just ask him a lot of questions like, hey, what’s it like out there.

Actually, I’ve watched a couple of his games. I’m an Arkansas kid born and raised. I’ve been to a couple of Razorback games and watched him play. I’m a fan of Raheim Sanders.”

Howell on Rocket: “Him being an SEC back, I feel like he knows a little bit more in-depth of things I can do to boost myself to that next level or to be the guy on the field. So I feel like just picking his brain and really learning the game and the ins and outs of just being an SEC running back. He’s definitely a great running back and a great person.

Howell on Adaway: Oscar, I feel like he’s a very three-dimensional running back. He can catch the ball. He can run the ball. He can block. I feel like his best attribute of the game is his mind, how he knows the game of football and how he can develop, learn the scheme very quickly. He can make a guy miss in a small space.

He’s not just limited to one type of run, like outside zone or just catching the ball. He’s really an all-around player that can make some things happen.

Adaway on defensive players: “Demetrius Knight, dog, Bangally Kamara, dog. Bam (Scott), dog. Debo (Williams), dog. Just going against those guys, like top-tier linebackers, not just in the SEC, but in the nation, man, those guys can go. So being able to go against some guys every day in one-on-ones and even after practice just picking their minds on what they’re thinking about and everything.

Then in the secondary, going against a 6’2″, 220 safety, when I get to the third level and Nick Emmanwori, that’s a blessing in disguise because you don’t really see that type of size and stature at that second level. So going against him and going against the Kilgore brothers, those dudes, they feed off one another.

Adaway on receivers: “Jared Brown and Gage Larvadain are two guys that can go. Like, just flat out can go. Payton Mangum is a huge sleeper, you know. I feel like young Mazeo Bennett, I’ve seen him do some things that freshman shouldn’t be doing, how he can adjust to the game of college coming from high school. He adjusted very quickly. Ahmari Huggins-Bruce, that kid can run. He looks like The Flash in real life running. The receiver room, the fans are going to love watching them ball out this football season.”
