Adam Schefter suggests Dallas Cowboys among surprise teams that could draft Shedeur Sanders

Adam Schefter suggests Dallas Cowboys among surprise teams that could draft Shedeur Sanders

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is one of the top remaining names available in the 2025 NFL Draft as Round 2 gets underway on Friday. Sanders went unselected in Round 1, a stunning outcome for the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.

Now, the attention turns to which team will take Sanders on Day 2. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said at this point, the team that takes Sanders could be a team that hasn’t been linked to him throughout the process. Schefter mentioned the Dallas Cowboys among others as a team to watch.

“The Tennessee Titans opted for Cam Ward; the Giants went for Jaxson Dart over Shedeur Sanders. I think there was a smaller market of teams that preferred to draft Shedeur,” Schefter said. “The Pittsburgh Steelers don’t have a second-round draft pick. They are not scheduled to be on the clock until pick No. 83. I think we’re at the point where it might be a team that drafts Shedeur that we haven’t even connected him to. Somebody that would be an outlying quarterback team.

“Again, this is not any evidence or any reporting. But I’m just giving you a team like the Seattle Seahawks, the Arizona Cardinals, the Dallas Cowboys. A team that we’ve never linked to Shedeur could all of a sudden step into the mix because they have a high grade on him, their pick comes up tonight and even though they don’t have a need, he would be the highest rated player on their board. That could happen this evening.”

The Cowboys, of course, are set at the position with Dak Prescott locked up long-term. He signed a four-year, $240 million extension with the Cowboys this past September. But he’s also recovering from a hamstring injury that prematurely ended his 2024 season. Still, he finished second in MVP voting the prior season and is the face of the franchise.

Dallas lost backup Cooper Rush to free agency. They then acquired second-year signal-caller Joe Milton earlier this month from the New England Patriots. But someone is going to take Sanders. And given the franchise’s connection to his dad, Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders, who won a Super Bowl in Dallas, perhaps the Cowboys could be a fit.

As a senior in 2024, Sanders threw for a career-best 4,134 yards on an impressive 74% completion percentage to go along with 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Spending the last two seasons playing for the Buffaloes, he accounted for 72 total touchdowns.
