A look at which recruits could be next to commit to Michigan State

A look at which recruits could be next to commit to Michigan State

Michigan State has concluded the first two official visit weekends in East Lansing during the month of June. We will look ahead to a slower weekend (June 16) with only one recruit coming to campus. Tight end Decker Degraaf of Glendora (CA) will be making his first trip to Michigan State.

The Spartans welcomed 18 official visitors so far this month. Michigan State added four-star safety Reggie Powers of Dayton (OH), and DB Camren Campbell of Tampa (FL) out of the June 9 weekend. The Spartans will look to continue the building momentum, holding five commitments in the 2024 class at the moment. We will look at five of the next candidates who could join the fold.

1) Four-star RB Anthony Carrie

Michigan State welcomed four-star RB Anthony Carrie of Tampa (FL) Carrollwood Day School on June 9 for an official visit. It was the third trip to East Lansing for the four-star running back. He took an unofficial visit earlier this spring as well. During the official visit Carrie was hosted by current freshman Spartan defensive back Eddie Pleasant. Pleasant is a former teammate of Carrie at Carrollwood Day.

The early buzz coming away from the official visit in East Lansing was that the visit went very well. Carrie has grown very close with Spartan running backs coach Effrem Reed. The pair spent a lot of time with on campus. Reed and Carrie also play video games together and have grown very close over the past year and beyond. Carrie has also mentioned to SpartanMag.com his thoughts on Reed’s abilities to scout and develop running backs. The four-star has taken note of Kenneth Walker, also impressed by current Spartan Nathan Carter earlier this spring.

Carrie was originally slotted to visit Michigan State on June 23. He cancelled a trip to Notre Dame and moved it up to June 9, also leaving the weekend of June 23 open. He confirmed with SpartanMag.com that he will take an official visit to North Carolina over the weekend of June 16.

Carrie would be a big boost to the 2024 Michigan State class, ranking a four-star the No. 291 overall recruit. He is ranked the No. 24 running back and the No. 43 recruit in Florida by the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings.

2) Three-star WR Tra’Mar Harris

Another June 9 visitor, three-star wide receiver Tra’Mar Harris of Cincinnati (OH) Winton Woods School, has had some buzz following his visit over the weekend. Harris will head to Purdue next (June 16), ahead of what is a June 30 final decision. Harris seems to have narrowed his list to the Spartans and Boilermakers. The decision could come as early as next week, unless he decides to stick to his original date.

Michigan State will welcome five wide receivers on official visits during the month of June. Courtney Hawkins has set himself with a deep board, as the Spartans will likely take a minimum of two to three, possibly more in the class. Purdue has sold Harris strongly on the offensive scheme that head coach Ryan Walters is implementing.

Harris is ranked the No. 692 overall recruit, the No. 102 wide receiver, and the No. 23 recruit in Ohio by the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings.

3) Three-star DB Syair Torrence

The third and last June 9 visitor on this list is defensive back Syair Torrence of Syracuse (NY) Christian Brothers Academy. Torrence was once committed to Syracuse, before Michigan State offered causing him to open things up and take a visit to East Lansing. Torrence will visit Syracuse this upcoming weekend (June 16), before announcing his final decision.

Michigan State did about as good as they could’ve on the visit of Torrence, setting the bar high for his hometown program. The Spartans have three defensive backs in the 2024 class in cornerbacks Jaylen Thompson, and Camren Campbell, along with safety/nickel Reggie Powers. Harlon Barnett and Jim Salgado will have some decisions to make with the remaining spots, sitting well with athlete Justin Denson, safety Jason Cross (will mention below), along with a possible off the radar name emerging in the next few weeks.

Torrence is ranked the No. 988 overall recruit, the No. 140 wide receiver, and the No. 7 recruit in New York by the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings.

4) Three-star OL Mercer and Charlton Luniewski

Michigan State and Chris Kapilovic are also off to a strong start with two commitments on the offensive line in tackle Andrew Dennis and interior lineman Logan Bennett. The Spartans will welcome a pair of versatile offensive lineman in Mercer Luniewski and Charlton Luniewski of Cincinnati (OH). The twins were offered by Michigan State on their first visit to campus in April during a spring practice. The pair has made it known they plan to be a package deal. Each brother could play both inside at guard, or outside at tackle at the next level.

The Spartans, along with Kentucky, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Virginia, and others have offered both brothers. Michigan State is the only official visit of the month for the twins, as the Spartans will look to close the deal.

Mercer (6-foot-5.5, 310) is ranked the No. 764 overall recruit, the No. 57 offensive tackle, and the No. 28 recruit in Ohio by the 2024 Industry Top Football Recruits.

Charlton (6-foot-4.5, 285) is ranked the No. 1330 overall recruit, the No. 113 interior lineman, and the No. 62 recruit in Ohio by the 2024 Industry Top Football Recruits.

5) Three-star S Jason Cross

Michigan State offered the three-star safety Jason Cross of Pittsburgh (PA) Bishop Canevin School in April, getting him on campus for the first time on April 15 for the spring game. Cross will make his second trip to East Lansing on June 23. Michigan State and Harlon Barnett will have a strong shot to close the deal.

He took an official visit to West Virginia on June 9, along with Syracuse on June 2. SpartanMag.com expects Cross to be a take at safety. Cross would pair well with cornerback commits Jaylen Thompson and Camren Campbell, and nickel Reggie Powers.

Cross is ranked a three-star, the No. 917 overall recruit, the No. 94 safety, and the No. 25 recruit in Pennsylvania, according to the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings. His other offers include Texas A&M, Penn State, Iowa State, and more. Cross also visited Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, West Virginia, and Penn State and others this spring.
