A late rising star out of McKinney (Tex.): LB Jonathan Agumadu
The most recent commit for USC, 2024 running back Bryan Jackson is one of many talented prospects currently walking the halls of McKinney High School, just north of Dallas.
The headliner name of their senior class is Jackson, being the standout playmaker and workhorse of the offensive side of the ball. The highest ranked prospects however are on the defensive side of the ball. 2024 safety and Florida commit Xavier Filsaime is a top-50 prospect and linebacker Riley Pettijohn is ranked as the No. 73 overall prospect in the 2025 class. Both prospects holds offers from USC.
There are a handful of other players on the roster who are picking up steam and hold some offers. But one name I have become intrigued with over the past month is one is that is new to their roster.
Class of 2024 linebacker Jonathan Agumadu.
Agumadu has spent the first few years of high school career at Richardson (Tex.) Pearce, but has recently transferred to McKinney, adding to their already stacked defense. Upon first glance, Agumadu fits the bill of a power five outside linebacker prospect. He measures in at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds with a well built frame.
And he is RAW! His junior season was his first playing on the defensive side of the ball, so his success was purely based on raw athleticism and a very basic knowledge of the position.
Hitting the recruiting scene
While at Pearce, Agumadu had minimal buzz around him, but immediately after transferring to McKinney, the process started. Because college coaches are coming to McKinney to see and evaluation a number of their other talents, they are coming across Agumadu.
Since transferring three weeks ago, he has picked up his first three offers from Missouri, UNLV, and Mississippi Valley State. The Missouri and UNLV offers came just four days ago.
Versatility
At his size, Agumadu has the ability to stand up and rush the passer from the edge position, but he also is able to put his hand in the dirt and move inside. At the college level, he likely fits more on the outside, likely playing playing between 235-250 pounds eventually.
Being that it was his first year of playing defense, his pass rush arsenal was limited but effective. At McKinney he will be able to develop some rush moves, which should elevate his game and production.
In his junior season in nine games, he finished with 48 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 19 quarterback hurries. He also had three pass deflections, one caused fumble and two blocked field goals.
I am intrigued to see the development this spring and summer from Agumadu now that he is in a superior high school program. He will surely add more offers in the coming weeks and months, and most certainly once he takes the field this fall. With multiple offers from USC and a commit at the school, I would expect there will be an evaluation from the staff at some point.
