A Horse Named After Devin Booker Blew Up the Keeneland Tote Board

Ahead of Thursday’s card at Keeneland, Kentucky fans kept a keen eye on “Brea from Three.” After all, who doesn’t want to see a horse named after a Wildcat win as a long shot just a few miles down the street from Rupp Arena? We had our eyes on the wrong horse.

Brea from Three was a 20-1 horse trying to break its maiden in a 4.5-furlong sprint. It finished near the back of the field in the first race at Keeneland. Fireworks flew later in the day, thanks to a pony named after another Wildcat.

Dbook, who clearly got his namesake from Devin Booker, was a long shot in Race 6. The rest of the field let him take the early lead in the 1 /116 race and he never let it go. Dbook went wire-to-wire as a 54-1 long shot. A $2 bet across the board paid $175.90.

The unexpected win for Dbook has enormous financial implications for Keeneland bettors. Let me explain.

To win a Pick-5 wager, a bettor must accurately predict the winner in five consecutive races. The winnings come from the pool of wagers. If there are zero winning Pick-5 tickets, that jackpot rolls over to the next one.

On Wednesday, a 54-1 long shot blew up the Pick-5, leading to a carryover of $32,121.42 on Thursday. I have a sneaky suspicion that nobody had Dbook in today’s Pick-5 pool. That means we will likely get two rollovers for Friday’s pool that will surely exceed six figures.

Even if the racing is chalk on Friday at Keeneland, Pick-5 bettors could walk away with full pockets, all thanks to an unexpected win from a horse named after Devin Booker.
