4-star William Satterwhite details Rocky Top decision

Akron, Ohio offensive lineman William Satterwhite ventured to Knoxville during spring practice to check out the Vols then made a return trip last month for an official visit. What he found was his future football home.

“The hospitality vibe and family vibe I got while I was there stood out,” Satterwhite stated about what made Tennessee his choice. “I feel like it’s a mix of southern hospitality and up north hospitality so like a Midwest feel. Made it feel like a homie place for me.”

Satterwhite made Glen Elarbee a happy man in early July when he told him he wanted to be a Vol. They have developed a nice relationship through the process.

“Coach Elarbee is like a father figure,” Satterwhite said. “He jokes around with the guys and he mixes play with work so it’s fun being there.”

As Elarbee has recruited the Ohio native, he has pushed the comparison to first round pick Darnell Wright. Satterwhite got to meet the newly minted Chicago Bear when he was in town.

“Coach Elarbee compared me to Darnell and then I got to meet him when I was there,” Satterwhite said. “Being compared to him shows what kind of high standards that coach Elarbee has for me which is great.

“To see him get drafted in the first round was surreal. To meet and talk to him and be compared to him was a great moment.”

He also got to spend time with Josh Heupel last month which made a good impression on him and his family.

“He is a great guy,” Satterwhite said. “We got to go to his house and spend time with the players and coaches and connect and talk with coach Heup.”

When he set down with his family and his coach to work toward a decision, he knew what he wanted.

“Having a chance to get on the field early and get reps and getting a good education as well,” Satterwhite said.

And it was on his visit that he got to see what Tennessee could bring academically.

“We got to go to the Engineer building and meet with the head of that major,” Satterwhite said. “There have been players that have done it before. Shows that the staff preaches education and balance both.”
