Long-time Purdue recruiting target Gicarri Harris planning fall decision

ROCK HILL, S.C. — As Purdue works to round out what could be a particularly strong 2024 recruiting class, its years-long pursuit of Suburban Atlanta’s Gicarri Harris continues on. The Boilermaker coaches may have to wait until fall, though, for a thumbs-up or thumbs-down from the consensus four-star combo guard.

The Grayson High School star said Thursday at the adidas Palmetto Road 3SSB Championships near Charlotte that he intends to commit in October. First, he’ll probably narrow his list of 20-plus offers down to a half dozen or so early next month. He said he plans to make official visits in September, with LSU, Miami and Virginia Tech being possibilities.

Purdue’s working on scheduling another visit, too.

“I want to see some other schools before I get back to them,” Harris said, “because I already visited there.”

Harris took a junior-year official visit to Purdue in the fall.

“They’ve been to every one of my live-period games,” Harris said, referring to the April open period, his high school games in June and his Thursday game in Rock Hill, attended by head coach Matt Painter and assistant Brandon Brantley. “They’ve been on me the whole time.

“They’re a great coaching staff. I have a great relationship with them. All the coaches, they treat me like a family. It’s just a great situation, and definitely one of my top schools.”

In addition to Purdue, he officially visited Stanford as a junior. He’s made more recent unofficials to Georgia and Georgia Tech.

Harris is a 6-foot-4, 180-plus-pound combo guard who’s an excellent shooter — he made five threes in a 24-point outing in the Atlanta Celtics’ win Thursday — and impact defender due to the attention he pays to that end of the floor, but his aggressiveness, strength, length and toughness.

Purdue’s seen it longer than anyone else.

“They think I’d be a perfect fit,” Harris said. “… They tell me I’m somebody they need in their program.”
