With recruitment shut down, Miami Hurricanes commit Chris Wheatley-Humphrey is enjoying tranquility

Monotonous isn’t quite the right word to describe Miami three-star running back commit Chris Wheatley-Humphrey’s life since he announced his decision April 17, but the South Broward High talent has enjoyed plenty of tranquility over the last several months.
Wheatley-Humphrey shut down his recruitment after committing to the Hurricanes over Louisville, Ole Miss, Florida State and others, and things have been quiet over the last two-and-a-half months. Outside of school and his regular life, little has happened or changed on his recruiting front. Wheatley-Humphrey isn’t entertaining any other programs and is cruising through the summer before getting ready for the fall football season in August.
“Things are smooth,” Wheatley-Humphrey said. “I’m not too aggravated anymore, no coaches (at other schools) coming at you. I’ve been good. The Canes are treating me well.”
Wheatley-Humphrey worked out for Miami at a prospect camp last month and competed for South Broward at the Hurricanes’ 7-on-7 tournament. He lined up almost exclusively at cornerback during the 7-on-7 tournament and virtually locked down Miami (Fla.) Central four-star receiver and Florida State commit Lawayne McCoy, spurring chatter that playing defense might also be an option at Miami.
He said he’s willing to be “an athlete” and play wherever the Hurricanes need him, even though so far he’s only talked to Miami about playing running back.
“It’s been a relief (being able to focus solely on on-field performances),” Wheatley-Humphrey said. “Everything’s been smooth and good, and I’m just happy to be a Cane.”
He said he talks to Miami’s coaching staff “every day” and is in a group chat with a horde of staff members including head coach Mario Cristobal. He added Miami’s staff told him they liked what they saw from him his last time on campus, and he wanted to work out at Miami’s camps to “see where I’m at” and receive pointers from Hurricane players and coaches.
Miami views him as an explosive speedster with big-play ability, and he wants to continue to develop his footwork in the offseason. But for the most part, his conversations with the Hurricanes have revolved around life away from football.
“They’re personal,” Wheatley-Humphrey said. “They ask me how I’ve been, how my family is, how school is going. They don’t really talk the way a recruiter would talk. They just talk the way a normal person on the street would talk to me. They’re like family.”
CaneSport’s Take
Wheatley-Humphrey’s raw athleticism makes him an incredibly versatile prospect, and he was remarkably efficient at cornerback at Miami’s last 7-on-7 tournament despite primarily training at running back. The Canes haven’t talked to him about playing in the secondary, but he’s more than willing to contribute wherever he’s needed.
