Remaining needs in Texas’ recruiting class at the midway point of the 2024 cycle

Remaining needs in Texas’ recruiting class at the midway point of the 2024 cycle

Twelve down. Roughly twelve to go. That’s the current standing of Longhorn recruiting following the pledge last night of Langham Creek tight end Jordan Washington, who became commitment No. 12.

Let’s reset the numbers.

At QB and RB, Texas is done. With Trey Owens and a pair of running backs the envy of every other college football program, the Horns are set in the backfield for the 2024 cycle.

At receiver Texas has two pledges and is still looking for two more.

With Washington, the Horns are unlikely to seek another high school tight end but might need to look to the portal in the likelihood that Ja’Tavion Sanders goes pro.

On the O-line, Daniel Cruz and Nate Kibble are in the boat, and OL coach Kyle Flood wants at least two more, one of which needs to be a tackle and one an interior lineman. Brandon Baker of Mater Dei appears to be the primary focus at OT, but others are also emerging.

Along the defensive front, the Horns have landed Alex January and are now waiting on decisions from seven or eight others. Whether it’s the edge position, defensive tackle or nose guard, this is the team’s biggest overall need and one that could tell the tale of the entire class.

At LB, Texas, at least for now, appears set to not over-reach for a prospect and instead rely on the guys they recruited a year ago.

Success in the secondary, like the Edge/DL spot, will be one of the keys to the overall success of the Horns for this recruiting class. A class is only as good as the needs it fills. And the Horns definitely need at least three more additions of a high caliber to round out the group.

At the halfway point, Texas has more than held serve. The RB group is ridiculous. They’ve filled a big need at TE, got the No. 1 center on their board, picked up a SEC-sized DL, and have things going in the right direction at Edge and in the secondary.

Now, Texas must finish.

Some of that will occur in the coming days, perhaps weeks. But some of the recruitments will be pushed into the regular season.

Texas just needs to stay the course and keep its momentum rolling steadily along.
