Newsstand: What Marcus Freeman is changing this year in Notre Dame spring practices

Newsstand: What Marcus Freeman is changing this year in Notre Dame spring practices

If you’re not changing, you’re not trying. Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman likely believes in that.

Some things don’t need to change. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it are also wise words to live by. But constant improvement and adaptation is important in a role like Freeman’s. He’s another year wiser, and what he has learned in the last 365 days is allowing him to make amendments to the way the Fighting Irish attack practices.

“Last year was more about taking the things I’ve done, the different spring practice structures I’ve been a part of and say this is what we will do day 1-15,” Freeman said. “This year I kind of said let’s look at last year’s practice No. 1 and look at the progression and look at how the first week went and then the second and do we need to have more time here or less time here or can we add a high running period here or a period that is not as intense.

“I’m looking at the structure of how we practice and finding ways to enhance so they perform better on Saturdays. That is what we are looking for. Enhance practice to perform better on Saturday.”

It goes without saying, the better a team practices the better it plays in games. Time will tell if the changes Freeman is making will lead to better results in the fall.

Chris Tyree: Irish wide receiver? It’s looking likely in 2023.

Notre Dame wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey is already treating Chris Tyree like one of his own in the WR room. Plenty of beneficial coaching going on here.

Quote of the day

“You just add that onto the plate. He’s a mature kid. He has been able to do a good job being at all his requirements and not being behind because he’s playing baseball. It’s a credit to him and his work ethic, the ability to say, ‘I have less free time than people in my class, and I’m OK with that.’”
