Tyler Aronson strengthens bond with SMU on official visit

2024 SMU quarterback commit Tyler Aronson took his official visit to the Hilltop earlier this month, once again getting a chance to see his future program. It was everything he wanted and more when it was all said and done.
“It definitely shattered my expectations for sure,” Aronson told On3. “I enjoyed every bit of it from the start to the end. Everything was fun. Just being able to better my relationship with some of the other recruits, players and coaches. It just reassured me that I made a decision that was the best for me. Everything there is likable from the people to city to new facilities and the new facilities they’re building.
“Just the support that they have from alumni and stuff like that. I’ll be surrounded by awesome teammates. I’ll be in position to succeed as well. It was a pretty cool experience I’ll remember.”
Getting to spend time with his future coaches and teammates helped build those bonds at SMU even more.
“Going out to eat with some of the other players and coaches,” Aronson said. “Being able to spend time with them outside of football and really build relationships with them off the field. Meeting some of the coaches’ families. Have a relationship that’s bigger than just football, talk to them about their family and stuff like that.”
Quarterbacks coach Johnny Brewer met with Aronson on the visit, sharing some of the expectations he has for him when he gets to Dallas.
“Got to talk about some of the stuff that I can expect coming in there,” he said. “How he coaches his quarterbacks and what I can look for coming in. We were able to watch some of the practice film and some of his keys and what he looks for. It was pretty cool to really see it from his eyes and communicate about things we like and dislike because pretty soon I’ll be playing for him.
“They want me to do everything to better myself. Focus on the little things and control what I can control. Take every rep with intent. They’re going to tell me the stuff they want to get better at. I’m definitely willing to do that. Put myself in position to be successful.”
Head coach Rhett Lashlee continues to build bonds with Aronson, who has known Lashlee and other staff members since their days at Miami.
“That was awesome,” he said. “I truly feel like we have a real relationship. Even off the field, he’s a good person. He genuinely does it for the right reasons. Obviously, on the field I like his coaching style. I think in these next couple years, they’re going to be really successful and put SMU on notice and show everyone what we’re capable of. It’s been a while since I first met him at Miami. Obviously, he’s the head coach now. His role is a little different, but it’s been cool to see him grow as a coach and stuff like that.”
Aronson takes center stage as recruiter
Aronson’s taken a big role as a recruiter in SMU’s class. Offensive linemen Graham Uter and King Large committed over the weekend, continuing to build momentum for the class.
“I enjoyed that for sure. It comes natural to me because I’m the quarterback commit for the class,” he said of his push as a recruiter. “I was telling them about how SMU’s really headed in the right direction in every way. Coach Lashlee does things right and everything they’re doing now and leading up to the season and in the future is going to help benefit the school as a whole and the football program as well. You can see by some of the guys they got in the portal that a lot can change in a year.
“This coming year and after that, I think the program is going to be in really good shape. It’d be pretty awesome for all of us to be a part of that program and build something special.”
With his senior season coming up, he’s ready to lead Vero Beach one more time. He’s eyeing a state championship to cap his high school career before he enrolls on the Hilltop in January.
“I’m super excited. It all came so fast. It’s crazy how I’m going to be starting college in January and my senior year is about to start. I’m looking forward to be spend one more season of high school with the guys. Hopefully go out with a state championship. Get better every day. Push them to better themselves every day. Be a good role model for some of the younger guys that need it. I remember how I was when I was a freshman. It’s always valuable having someone to look up to.”
According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Aronson ranks as the No. 61 overall quarterback in the country and No. 136 overall prospect in Florida.
