Newsstand: Two Notre Dame athletes make national teams

Two Notre Dame athletes made their respective national teams for major tournaments this summer. Women’s soccer player Kiki Van Zanten will represent Jamaica in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, while Cassandre Prosper will represent Canada in the FIBA AmeriCup in Mexico.

Van Zanten, a graduate midfielder, scored seven goals and picked up 11 assists this past season for Notre Dame. In 2022, she scored the game-winning goal for Team Jamaica — also known as the Reggae Girlz — in the CONCACAF bronze medal game.

“I’m filled with honor and pride to represent the Jamaican women’s national team at the World Cup this summer,” Van Zanten said in a press release. “I would like to thank everyone that has been in my corner during my career and that continues to support me. I can’t wait to play on the world’s biggest stage and make everyone back home proud.”

Prosper, who is from Montreal, averaged 5.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game for Notre Dame this past season. She came to South Bend as a five-star recruit in the class of 2022.

Prosper begins AmeriCup play against Mexico on July 2, while Van Zanten begins her World Cup run against France on July 23.

Quote of the day

“I’m very interested to see what happens with him, because the speed, the agility, the twitch, he’s got all of those traits. The modern NFL is becoming a game where you just get the ball into your playmakers’ hands however you can. I think there’s something to be unearthed there with his versatility.”
