Reece Vander Zee calls new offer a dream come true
In-state wide receiver Reece Vander Zee picked up a new scholarship offer today. It came from the University of Iowa, which is a big one for the 6-foot-5, 185-pound Vander Zee, a lifelong Hawkeye fan.
“It’s a dream come true,” Vander Zee told HawkeyeReport.com. “I grew up an Iowa fan my whole life and looked up to these guys, so to have them offer is really special.”
The new opportunity came during a campus visit today for the Rock Rapids native, as he was in Iowa City for the first day of spring practice for the Hawkeyes. It was Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz that gave the news to the junior from Central Lyon High School.
“I talked to Coach Ferentz in his office and he offered me,” said Vander Zee. “He was just saying how they like my film and my character and they wanted to offer me a full ride scholarship.”
As for practice, the Class of 2024 prospect was impressed with Iowa’s approach and how efficiently they moved from one drill to the next to get things done.
“I really liked how the coaches told us how it was going to be and were really upfront with me like an open book,” Vander Zee said. “I liked how they structure everything.”
Vander Zee, a high school teammate of incoming Iowa freshman Zach Lutmer, has won state titles in football and basketball this past year. He is also an impressive pitcher with college interest in baseball as well. Last fall, he finished his junior season with 32 catches for 768 yards and 10 touchdowns for Central Lyon. At 6-foot-5, he could potentially grow into a tight end in college, but Iowa is projecting him more at wide receiver right now.
“They see me more as a wide receiver mostly,” said Vander Zee.
Vander Zee now holds scholarship offers from Iowa, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Air Force, Northern Iowa, Montana State, South Dakota State, and Yale. After today’s visit to Iowa, he has two more trips on his schedule this month and then will look a little more closely at a potential decision.
“I’m visiting Iowa State and K-State this weekend and then I’ll probably make a decision in a few months,” he said.
