South Carolina women’s basketball: Gamecocks in the WNBA – Training Camp edition

South Carolina women’s basketball: Gamecocks in the WNBA – Training Camp edition

WNBA training camps begin on Sunday, April 27. Get caught up on where all the former Gamecocks will be playing.

There are 12 former Gamecocks on training camp rosters (plus another player who played for South Carolina for a season before transferring). That includes three 2025 draft picks and five players who changed teams.

The first preseason games begin on May 2.

Note: Training camp contracts are not guaranteed roster spots, and there is no penalty to the team when a player is waived. It’s not impossible to make the team on a training camp contract – Mikiah Herbert Harigan did it last season – but it is rare.

Laeticia Amihere – Golden State (Claimed off Waivers from Atlanta)
2024 stats: 17 games, 4.9 minutes, 1.1 points, 1.6 rebounds, 0.2 assists, 0.2 blocks

Outlook: Atlanta selected Amihere as a developmental player, but changed to a win-now mode last offseason. That meant Amihere was squeezed out. The expansion Valkyries claimed her off waivers, and she will have a new chance to make her mark.

Aliyah Boston – Indiana
2024 stats: 40 games, 30.9 minutes, 14.0 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists. 1.2 blocks, 0.9 steals

Outlook: It took Boston and Caitlin Clark about half a season to figure out how to play together, but once they did, Indiana made an impressive run to the playoffs. Boston has a chance to become one of the league’s elite players this season, and Indiana hopes to be a season or two away from contending for a title.

Kamilla Cardoso – Chicago
2024 stats: 32 games, 27.4 minutes, 9.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.4 blocks

Outlook: Cardoso missed the beginning and end of the season with a shoulder injury. She and Angel Reese give Chicago their frontcourt for the foreseeable future, but the Sky are still trying to build a team around them.

Zia Cooke – Seattle (Training Camp Contract, Waived by Los Angeles)
2024 stats: 29 games, 8.9 minutes, 3.6 points, 0.6 rebounds, 0.6 assists

Outlook: A regime change in Los Angeles was followed by a massive roster overhaul (including a blockbuster trade involving Seattle). Cooke wasn’t part of the new plans, but Seattle, which is now in a rebuilding mode, decided to take a flyer on her.

Sania Feagin – Los Angeles Draft Pick (Round 2, 21st overall)
Outlook: Los Angeles brought in a new coach, Utah’s Lynne Roberts, and brought in a new centerpiece, former Aces guard Kelsey Plum. Feagin is part of the makeover, especially with last year’s top pick, Cameron Brink, expected to miss at least the first half of the season due to injury.

Allisha Gray – Atlanta
2024 stats: 40 games, 33.2 minutes, 15.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.1 steals

Outlook: Gray was Atlanta’s iron woman, leading the injury-plagued Dream to the playoffs. Atlanta made a big splash in the offseason by adding Brittney Griner, and they hope that with a healthy season and new coach Karl Smesko, they can do more than just make the playoffs.

Bree Hall – Indiana Draft Pick (Round 2, 20th overall)
Outlook: Indiana needed a reliable three-and-D wing, so they traded for Sophie Cunningham and drafted Hall. With Lexie Hull already on the roster, there probably isn’t room for all three.

Tyasha Harris – Dallas (Traded from Connecticut to Dallas)
2024 stats: 39 games, 28.8 minutes, 10.5 points, 3.0 assists, 1.8 rebounds, 1.0 steals

Outlook: Two years ago, after a couple of seasons of misusing her, Dallas gave up on Harris and shipped her to Connecticut. Harris revived her career, leading the league in three-point shooting in her first season and then becoming a starter and posting a career year last season. Now Harris is back in Dallas under a different staff. Hopefully, this one knows what it has.

Mikiah Herbert Harrigan – Dallas (Training Camp Contract, Rights Traded from Phoenix to Dallas)
2024 stats: 31 games, 10.8 minutes, 3.2 points, 1.5 rebounds, 0.5 steals

Outlook: After almost three years out of the league, Herbert Harrigan turned a training camp contract into a roster spot for Phoenix last season. She proved she can play in the WNBA, but was moved to Dallas as part of the same trade that brought in Ty Harris. Now Herbert Harrigan has to prove herself again.

Tiffany Mitchell – Las Vegas (Free agent signing)
2024 stats: 24 games, 16.3 minutes, 4.9 points, 1.5 rebounds, 0.8 assists

Outlook: Mitchell was Connecticut’s sixth woman and defensive specialist for the first half of last season. But Mitchell developed sepsis and was confined to a hospital bed for months. She finally rejoined the team at the end of the season, but still wasn’t able to play. Now she reunites with her former college teammate A’ja Wilson.

Te-Hina Paopao – Atlanta Draft Pick (Round 2, 18th overall)
Outlook: Atlanta brought in Brittney Griner in the offseason, but needed a shooter to help space the floor. That’s where Paopao hopefully fits in.

A’ja Wilson – Las Vegas
2024 stats: 38 games, 34.4 minutes, 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, 2.3 assists, 1.8 steals

Outlook: Wilson was the unanimous MVP last season and had probably the greatest season ever (especially if you include the Olympics, where she had arguably the greatest Olympics of any American woman ever). Wilson set records for points in a season, rebounds in a season, and scoring average, among others. She was so dominant that she even got Texas to wear her shoes against South Carolina in the Final Four.

*Saniya Rivers – Connecticut Draft Pick
Outlook: As a freshman, Rivers won a national championship with South Carolina. After the season, she transferred to NC State, where she led the Wolfpack to a Final Four appearance. Now, Rivers is part of the rebuild in Connecticut.

Others:
Brea Beal – Seems to be retired
Kaela Davis – Finished last season with Chicago
Destanni Henderson – Was with Atlanta midseason, played in Turkey
Victaria Saxton – Waived by Indiana
