Lee Corso uses Kirk Herbstreit to send message to college football fans after retirement news
Lee Corso, a few months from being 90 years old, isn’t online at all. That said, with the outpouring of love from college football fans following the news of his upcoming retirement in August, he asked a friend to help express his thanks and gratitude.
Kirk Herbstreit took to Twitter again on Friday in a follow-up about Corso’s retirement from ‘College GameDay’ come kickoff of Week 1 on August 30th. He shared a conversation the two of them had where his longtime colleague wanted him to help to share his appreciation to all those who wished him well yesterday upon the announcement.
“Ya gotta know our guy doesn’t have a computer let alone social media…haha…so I called him just now to make sure he knew how much the CFB community has been pouring out their love for him,” Herbstreit tweeted on Friday afternoon. “as we talked about other things we were about to hang up and he said “hey Kirk can you put up on your Facebook or Twitter or whatever it is how much I appreciate all the well wishes-it really means a lot to me”-and I told him “I don’t have Facebook but I’ll definitely send out a tweet to let people know how much you appreciate it”. It’s hard to let go I’m sure-but he really sounds like he’s at peace and it’s the right time. God bless him-he’s the best!”
Corso, the last remaining member of the original cast of ‘College GameDay, had his retirement announced by the show and the network yesterday. That’ll end what’s been 38 years of headgear picks, not so fasts, and plenty of other entertainment for him for fans to start their Saturdays with since 1987.
With that, the sport of college football reacted with a bittersweet feeling about him no longer being on College GameDay. That included messages shared from around the game, including his own colleagues like from the show with Herbstreit, Rece Davis, Pat McAfee, and Chris Fowler as well as Stephen A. Smith at ESPN.
