Atwood walk-off blast seals No. 3 Texas’s comeback win over No. 9 LSU

The Texas offense struggled to string hits together against LSU ace Sydney Berzon most of the day. But it only took one swing to get hot, and Texas did it with the long ball. Mia Scott launched a two-run homer in the sixth and Joley Mitchell shortly followed with a solo shot to tie the game.

The Longhorns had a chance to end it in the seventh and took it. An error by Avery Hodge essentially extended the inning after Berzon collected the second out of the frame against the next batter. A single and a walk loaded the bases for Reese Atwood. There was no working around the Texas All-Time RBI leader. Atwood launched a grand slam off the graduate housing building beyond the left field fence to secure the 7-3 series-opening win.

Texas really did struggle with Berzon for most of the game. Berzon had only allowed two hits entering the sixth inning, retiring 11 straight batters at one point.

Berzon and Teagan Kavan were in a pitching duel for most of the game, as the first runs of the game didn’t come until the fourth. LSU cashed in on an error and one of Maddox McKee’s three hits. Avery Hodge poked a two-strike, two-out, two-run single into left field.

Jalia Lassiter led off the fifth with a double and came around to score on a groundout by Tori Edwards.

Tigers collected nine hits against Kavan but couldn’t find the key hits. Hodge’s hit was the only with runners in scoring position. LSU finished 1-for-12, leaving nine runners on.

LSU will try to stop the bleeding and end the losing streak at 5:30 ET on Friday in Austin.
