Akron transfer RB Jordan Simmons announces transfer from Ole Miss after spring

Akron running back Jordon Simmons is transferring from the Ole Miss Rebels after spending just the spring in Oxford, he announced Wednesday.

The 6-foot, 192-pound Simmons has one year of collegiate eligibility remaining after leading the Zips with 664 rushing yards and two touchdowns over 11 games this past season. Simmons transferred to Akron following four years at Michigan State, where he tallied 520 rushing yards over 34 career carries in East Lansing.

Simmons was behind players like Kewan Lacy and Logan Diggs on the Ole Miss depth chart, it appeared, and opted to go somewhere else to be the starter.

“I have decided to re-enter the transfer portal as a post-bachelor student-athlete with one year of eligibility remaining,” Simmons wrote. “I want to sincerely thank Ole Miss for the opportunities and support. I am now excited and open to exploring the next chapter in my journey.”

Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Oregon, South Carolina, Nebraska, Florida State, Kentucky, West Virginia, Arkansas, Colorado, Maryland, Pitt, Louisville and Boston College, among others, offered Simmons.

Simmons played high school football at McEachern (Powder Spring, Ga.) High, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 563 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

He ran for 1,093 yards on 154 carries (7.1 avg.) and 16 touchdowns to help lead McEachern (Ga.) to the Region 3-7A title and a 12-1 record as a senior in 2019.
