LSU hires LHSCA Director, longtime coach to head HS Relations

LSU Football is hiring LHSCA Director Eric Held, a longtime and well-respected high school coach around the state, as the program’s new director of high school relations.

The New Orleans native has been a member of both the Louisiana High School Coaches Association and Louisiana Football Coaches Association since 1995, including serving in the lead role of the LHSCA since 2019 working out of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association central office.

In that position, Held was a key voice for coaches within the LHSAA and oversaw the LHSCA’s annual coaches convention, all-star events, awards and development opportunities among other responsibilities, according to the LHSAA website.

The former Brother Martin and Nicholls State letterman and special teams captain, who also earned a master’s in educational leadership from LSU-Shreveport, spent 25 years as a teacher and coach in both north and south Louisiana before accepting the LHSCA director position.

He compiled a 49-27 head coaching record including the 2004 and 2005 seasons at St. Mary’s in Natchitoches and then from 2008 to 2012 at St. Michael the Archangel in Baton Rouge, leading the Tigers and Warriors to the playoffs all seven seasons — all prior to the LHSAA’s select/nonselect postseason split.

Held then accepted at nearby Catholic (Baton Rouge) in the spring of 2013 where he worked with the Bears’ special teams units and running backs and was a part of the program’s first-ever state championship in 2015 on coach Dale Weiner‘s staff and a second title and a third Superdome trip under coach Gabriel Fertitta.

The move continues coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers’ tweaking of their staff with the on-field additions of defensive line coach Kyle Williams and tight ends coach and run game coordinator Alex Atkins, along with a slew of adjustments in other front-office and off-field roles.

On3’s Pete Nakos also reported Monday evening LSU was hiring Ole Miss assistant director of player personnel Jai Choudhary as its next associate director of player personnel.
