Wendell Gregory details official visit, chance for family to see South Carolina program

As a South Carolina commitment, Marietta (Ga.) Walton four-star linebacker Wendell Gregory has been on multiple visits to see what the Gamecocks have to offer but this weekend’s official visit provided something a little different — a chance for grandma to check out the program.
“My grandma was here, this is her first time here, so it was great for her,” Gregory said. “She loved it. Talking to every coach there is, Coach (Shane) Beamer a lot. In the office of Coach Beamer today, talking to my grandma, she loves it. She knows it’s a great atmosphere for me, and it’s a place to be home.”

While there were several things that stood out on the visit, the four-star prospect said he especially liked some of the new enhancements to the photoshoots.
“I did a photo shoot today, and we’re doing this new thing where it’s like, they put your favorite music on, and you walk down the locker room, it’s pretty sick, it’s gonna come out soon,” Gregory said. “It’s like a hype video, it’s like a hype video (with) the laser and all that.”
As a long-time commitment, Gregory also spent some of the three days on campus trying to convice the other guys to join him in Columbia.
“We got a kid, Coach Beamer posted about it on Twitter,” Gregory said. “He’s gonna post his commitment soon, but he committed. We played Family Feud, and he committed, did his little commitment video, so it was sick. He committed, two other guys that’s not committed yet, we’re talking their heads up, making them feel like this is home, they love it.”

Gregory was hosted on his trip by fellow linebacker Debo Williams.
“He’s a guy, he’s a leader on the team,” Gregory said. “Showing me the in and outs, he was like, when I get here, don’t overwhelm myself with the plays. Het in the playbook, just take it play by play, it’ll all sink in soon.”
The 6-foot-2, 217-pound linebacker was recruited to Carolina by defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Clayton White and they’ve maintained a strong relationship.
“It’s amazing, I was in their office talking, me and my grandma talking about plays, all the stunts that we’re gonna be going through when I come down, I’m coming early in January. So I’m gonna be coming, get my head in the playbook, get quicker on my feet. So yeah, it’s great, me and Coach White are tight, for sure.”
The visit also offered and opportunity for Gregory to get a feel for exactly how he’ll be used in the defense — and the staff has a special plan for his unique skillset.
“Same thing I do in high school,” Gregory said. “What they call it in my high school is, it’s an ‘okie package,’ basically I’m in a Hollywood stance, so it’s like a d-end but whatever the coverage they call, I can jump back into space, and I can come off the edge. And Coach White we’re gonna install that new playbook.”
The On3 Consensus – a complete and equally weighted industry standard that takes into account rankings from all four major recruiting services – ranks Gregory as the No. 151 overall prospect in the class as well as the No. 15 linebacker and No. 23 prospect in Georgia.
On3’s analysts are even higher on Gregory, ranking him the No. 57 overall prospect, No. 4 linebacker and No. 11 prospect in Georgia for the 2024 class.
Gregory plans to be back in Columbia for a cookout later this summer and for games in the fall.
