Tennessee throws second combined no-hitter of the year

For the second time this season, top-ranked Tennessee has thrown a no-hitter, the latest coming in Friday’s run ruled win. Tennessee starter Liam Doyle and Dylan Loy combined to no-hit Texas A&M in a 10-0 win in seven innings. 

The lady time Tennessee threw a pair of no-hitters in a single season was 1976. It’s also the first no-hitter in SEC play since Jack Leiter accomplished the feat for Vanderbilt in a 2021 win over South Carolina.

Liam Doyle was the starter for the second time in a no hitter this season. Doyle went six innings striking out eight. Doyle did walk two and hit two batters, but didn’t give up a hit in a 96-pitch night. Loy came in for the top of the seventh and made quick work to end the night.

Tennessee previously accomplished the feat on four separate occasions, including earlier this year. 

The Vols defeated St. Bonaventure 12-0 on March 3, 2025. Five pitchers combined for the no-hitter, led by Doyle, who had 13 strikeouts in 5.2 innings. 

The Vols defeated College of Charleston 14-0 on Feb. 21, 2000 when Kurt Scott, Brad Love, Logan Brummitt, Marlyn Tisdale and Brandon Crowe combined to issue no hits.

Tennessee blanked Tusculum College 13-0 on Feb. 22, 1984 when David Curl, Jeff Owen, Jeff Glover, Steve Searcy and Rich DeLucia accomplished the feat.

UT first combined for a no-hitter on March 16, 1976 when the Vols shutout Slippery Rock 8-0. Rick Honeycutt and Jim Gaylor combined to toss the scoreless five innings.

Tennessee has also thrown five individual no-hitters in program history with the latest coming in 2002. UT’s program no-hitter count is now at 10 total with five individual efforts and five combined no-no’s.
