Miami states its case for landing WR Jacory Barney, who is down to 3 after official visit with decision looming

Miami states its case for landing WR Jacory Barney, who is down to 3 after official visit with decision looming

Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes are putting a big emphasis on keeping top talent home. And that’s certainly the case with Miami (Fla.) Palmetto wide receiver Jacory Barney. Miami has started making a big push for him recently, which led to him canceling his official visit to Illinois and instead taking one with the Hurricanes this weekend.

So how did it go with the 6-1, 180-pounder?

“Great, Miami is up there for sure,” Barney told CaneSport. “It was live in the 305. I saw a different side of Miami and I’m from here. I’m from down south (living in Homestead) so it’s different. Dang, it’s crazy how much you can experience that I didn’t even know at Miami. Like just eating by the beach and seeing dolphins, and I hadn’t spent a lot of time in Coral Gables like that.”

Barney’s official visit to Miami was his third and final one of the summer after taking trips to both Nebraska and Texas A&M.

He says that’s his final three along with Miami, and that an announcement will come next month.

“I’m not sure if it’ll be early or later in the month,” Barney says.

Certainly the Canes put their best foot forward and seem to have positioned themselves to potentially land Barney, who says he doesn’t want to name a frontrunner heading into his announcement.

“I just want to go somewhere that I have a chance to get bigger, get on the field early,” Barney said. “I have goals for my freshman season, get playing time, work my way up. Be around good people, people where I’ll be taken care of. Real genuine people where my mom knows she can trust I’ll be good.”

Barney says his mother is leaving the decision up to him and that distance won’t be a factor.

This was Barney’s fourth time on campus in the last month. According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Nebraska is the current favorite to land his commitment with a 62% probability, followed by Miami with a 36.6% probability. He is the No. 412 overall prospect in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

Barney was hosted by WR Isaiah Horton, who he became friendly with on a prior unofficial visit.

CaneSport’s take

An early enrollee, Miami’s really put itself in a good spot with Barney and we think UM has made up the gap with Nebraska. Barney also says that when he met with coaches Kevin Beard and Mario Cristobal that “Their message to me was that they have a plan for me, that I can come there and I can just work and I can do it all because Miami, they’ve been the standard from back in the day and we’re trying to get that back to where we can be, that I can come in and do that and build my own legacy.”
