Tennessee well represented on Midseason All-American lists

Tennessee well represented on Midseason All-American lists

As we’re entering the fourth conference series of the year with 29 games already gone final, college baseball publications have begun announcing their midseason All-American teams. Tennessee is well represented.

D1 Baseball has Tennessee second baseman Gavin Kilen and starting pitcher Liam Doyle listed as first-team midseason All-Americans while first baseman Andrew Fischer is named to the second-team.

The publication also has coach Tony Vitello listed under the superlative ‘Best Coaching Job’ as the reigning national champions sport a 27-2 overall record with an 8-1 mark in Southeastern conference play.

“Unlike recent defending national champs from the SEC (Mississippi State, Ole Miss and to a lesser extent LSU), the Volunteers have avoided the championship hangover — emphatically,” D1 Baseball wrote. “The Volunteers opened their title defense by reeling off 20 straight wins (the longest winning streak in college baseball this season), and they sit atop the D1Baseball Top 25.

“This is a much different team than it was a year ago – but it is once again the best team in college baseball, at least to this point.”

Perfect Game also has Vitello as their Midseason Coach of the Year and list the Vols as the Midseason Team of the Year.

Relief pitcher Nate Snead was named to the third-team while Levi Clark earned Freshman first-team hitting honors.

Kilen, who tallied just one at-bat over the past eight games while recovering from a hamstring injury, led Tennessee in average (.431), hits (31), home runs (10, RBI (25), runs (32) and slugging percentage (.986) at the time of his injury.

“I think right now, the thing for us is to get Gavin (Kilen) in the lineup, and then probably next would be defense,” Vitello updated Tuesday night. “I don’t know if it will come together.”

Fischer leads Tennessee with 11 home runs and 31 walks to go along with a .306 batting average, 35 runs scored, 32 runs batted in, four doubles and a .741 slugging percentage.

Doyle, Tennessee’s Friday night starter, is 4-1 on the season with a 2.95 ERA. The southpaw leads the nation with 73 strikeouts coupled with just 12 walks over a team-high 36.2 innings pitched.

Phillips, Tennessee’s Saturday night starter, has impressed with a 2-0 record and a 2.02 ERA with 42 strikeouts and nine walks over 35.2 innings pitched.

Snead, Tennessee’s Swiss army knife on the mound, owns a 2-0 record across 26.0 innings pitched with a 2.08 ERA and 21 strikeouts to eight walks.

Clark was one of the national leaders in batting average the first month of the season but has since cooled, going just 1-for-20 in his last nine games played. Still, the rookie boasts a .349 average on the season with six home runs, 23 RBI, five doubles and 17 runs scored.

Tennessee returns to action this weekend for a rematch of the 2024 College World Series Finals with Texas A&M from Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
