Denny Hamlin reacts to beef between Ty Gibbs, Tyler Reddick

Denny Hamlin reacts to beef between Ty Gibbs, Tyler Reddick

Ty Gibbs and Tyler Reddick became enemies on Lap 298 of Sunday’s race at Martinsville. Gibbs was putting together his best race of the season, until he went sideways after contact with Reddick.

Gibbs clearly thought Reddick dumped him, threatening to fight him: “You’d better keep me away from that little f***er [Reddick] after this race, too,” Gibbs told his team. For Denny Hamlin, this dispute involved a teammate in Gibbs and one of his 23XI Racing drivers in Reddick. The latter was at fault from his perspective, he said on Monday’s “Actions Detrimental” podcast.

“I watched that one and it looked like Tyler kind of jammed into a hole that was definitely going to close. It looked like he was playing defense to Austin Dillon, more than trying to make a move on Ty Gibbs at the time,” Gibbs said. “I looked at it and the 45 [Reddick] came off the corner and was trying to clear. He was really driving into Turn 1 really fast to try to get back to the bottom and at that point, he got to the bottom.

“Gibbs has got probably two car lengths to him, so he’s thinking he can diamond this corner like he usually is. But as he’s coming down the racetrack on Turn 2, the 45 sticks it in there and spins out Gibbs. Definitely Tyler’s fault on that one. He went to talk to him after the race, good to get that cleared up and what not.”

Gibbs, running 11th at the time, went into Turns 1 and 2 a couple car lengths ahead of Reddick. But Gibbs came in a bit high and gave enough room for Reddick to come down the bottom. The two made contact and Gibbs went around. Reddick told his team he tried to lift for Gibbs, but Austin Dillon — running behind him — didn’t get the memo. Gibbs’ team agreed with Reddick’s assessment.

“Normal deal. He stuck his nose and then the 3 was just piling through him from behind,” Gibbs was told over the radio, per Jeff Gluck of The Athletic. “Nothing you can do about it.”

The two had what appeared to be a civil chat on pit road. They talked for nearly a minute and Gibbs left without comment, per Toby Christie of Racing America.

Gibbs recovered quickly, flirting with the top 10 for the remainder of the race. Right behind him was Reddick, who stayed clear of Gibbs. The two raced each other clean all the way to the checkered flag. Gibbs finished 13th, Reddick 14th.

Gibbs needed that, given his start to the 2025 season. He entered Sunday’s race 34th in the points standings, with five finishes outside the top 20 and a pair of DNFs. Gibbs was better — much better — at Martinsville, and he was rewarded with a quality finish.
