SMU trending with multiple top targets after visits

SMU Football wrapped up its official visit weekend, the final one of June. There was a lot of talent on the Hilltop once again and the Mustangs look like they’re in position to have a successful finish to the month.

*** On campus this weekend was Dallas Christian (Tex.) defensive back William Nettles, one of the top priorities for the coaching staff from the get-go. Nettles is a prospect most feel SMU is battling Purdue for and it is a real battle. Sam Carter’s led the recruitment from Purdue’s side and has a great bond. So does Rickey Hunley though and the Mustangs are hoping that wins out. SMU’s been on him longer than any other program and is hoping to reel in that commitment. He’ll make his decision around the 4th of July and SMU has positioned itself well.

*** Things are looking ship shape for the Mustangs to reel in four-star Duncanville (Tex.) safety Ka’Davion Dotson-Walker. SMU’s positioned itself well and it wouldn’t be surprising if he made a decision relatively soon after his visit. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he’s the No. 286 overall prospect and No. 24 safety in the nation.

*** SMU also sits in a great spot for Cedar Hill (Tex.) defensive back Alexander Rodgers, who will make his decision on Monday. Rodgers is being heavily pursued by Kansas State, but the local program is expected to be the pick here. SMU did a terrific job here with Rickey Hunley leading the way.

*** Corona (Calif.) Centennial twins and offensive linemen Brent Helton and Wade Helton had a great visit to the Hilltop. SMU got the last official visit for both, which always helps. Offensive line coach Garin Justice has been on a tear lately as well and has a good relationship there. We spoke with Wade and he said Justice is why the Mustangs are firmly in the mix for the twins. SMU is near the top for both, but Iowa State is viewed as the top contender for these California prospects, but SMU is firmly near the top as well as Arizona State.

*** SMU’s swinging away at four-star Pflugerville (Tex.) Weiss defensive back Peyton Morgan, but I do think Texas Tech has the momentum in this one. Morgan is an On3 four-star prospect, who said that despite the buzz around Texas Tech, he said SMU is firmly in the mix as is TCU, Colorado, Arizona, Nebraska and others. SMU is a dark horse here and the Mustangs did a nice job, but we think he heads elsewhere.

*** The two other official visitors were four-star EDGE Dakyus Brinkley and four-star running back Frankie Arthur. Brinkley and Arthur are both very much interested in SMU and the visits were key to continuing that momentum with both. Sources on SMU’s side of things feel like both visits went even better than anticipated, thrusting the program firmly in the mix here for both.
