Dak Prescott trade rumors: Cowboys, Browns reported discussions addressed by NFL insider

Wednesday brought some wild rumors surrounding Dak Prescott and the potential trade. The Cleveland Browns were on the other side amid their quarterback situation. Before anything ran too rampant, NFL Network’s Jane Slater stepped in.

According to Slater, there is nothing to see regarding the rumors. She says Dallas is not working on a trade with Cleveland to give up Prescott. A GIF was even attached to the tweet, with somebody throwing a bucket of water toward the screen.

“I run it all down when working this beat and the Dallas Cowboys are NOT working on trading Dak to the Browns,” Slater said via X. “In fact, texts with two sources tell me ‘fake news’ and ‘absolutely not’ before this gets any sort of wheels.”

Trading Prescott would be quite difficult for Dallas, mainly because there is a no-trade clause in the contract. Even if Prescott were to wave it, the Cowboys would be eating up quite a bit of cap space by getting rid of him. Around $148 million, to be exact, if the move was made pre-June 1. Even post-June 1, the number sits around $50 million.

Just ahead of the 2024 season, Prescott signed a deal keeping him with the Cowboys for an additional four years. This will be the first year of the contract as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2029 season.

Prescott threw for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions before his season was cut short by an injury. Dallas spent most of the year with Cooper Rush at quarterback before turning to Trey Lance for the season finale. A 7-10 record saw them fall short of the playoffs and begin a new era. Mike McCarthy is out as the head coach and Brian Schottenheimer is taking over.

One area the Cowboys will not be starting over is quarterback. Based on Slater’s report, Prescott is not going anywhere and certainly not to the Browns. Even if there was a desire to move on, too many factors appear to hamper a potential trade. QBs Deshaun Watson and Kenny Pickett will have to do in Cleveland heading into the 2025 NFL Draft.

Social media rumors can quickly gain steam at times, even when they claim to have sourced material. Slater made sure to quickly shut down and throw cold water on the idea of the Cowboys trading Prescott.
